Default Oil Pan Gasket Leak

Do oil pan gaskets need to be tightened a certain way or torqued a certain way? Mine was leaking and got it replaced with an oem one and it is leaking more!!

yes they do.. it's been 6 months since I've done one but if memory serves me correctly it's torqued to 18ft lbs and you torque them down in a pattern which is hard to describe in words. I'll try to find the picture

its less than 18 pounds, its only like 8.7 ft/pounds. You do the nuts first middle top, middle bottom, right top, right bottom, left top, left bottom, then so on for the bolts. And don't forget to use sealent on the main seal and oil pump sides.

Just use a 1/4" rachet and turn them until they stop (bottom out). Make sure you follow the correct tightening order. If you've see the gasket pushing out a little bit, you've over-tightened.

I tighten them like I tighten the nuts on the valve cover... I wouldn't take a torque wrench to these, you'll probably break a bolt unless you have a small torque wrench for inch/lbs.

I speak from experience. I've replaced the gasket on 3 different motors, no leaks.

If you like the torque wrench so much, go use it on your valve cover nuts...

If you read my response, you'll notice this phrase "you'll probably break a bolt unless you have a small torque wrench for inch/lbs." If this guy is asking questions about how to replace a gasket, he probably doesn't have several torque wrenchs specific to different ranges of torque.

It's a rubber gasket, not to mention you can SEE it push out if it's too tight.

i agree with my buddy fuji there i've always just hand tighten my oil pan bolts but dude in this case i don't think we should tell him to do this cause from the looks of this he needs a TORQUE wrench... below 10lbs is good bro, thats what i tell my techs to on all the oil pan gasket leaks that comes into the shop... but i've seen some do it at 12lbs... just stick to 10...
