Default K and N filter?

My new little ride (88) has a conical K and N filter installed with the stock induction tube and filter assy removed. Is there any advantage to this set up? Is sucking hot air from the engine compartment going to down play any advantage the K and N might have given?
Thanks in advance

the only advantage I could see with sucking hot air would be better gas milage
