From what I know, it is becase the reverse gear does not have a syncro. And if u dont know what that is, i'll try to explain, i know what it does but here goes. THe syncro is what stops the gears from spinning for a moment so that they can engage. . . . otherwise the seperate gears would just beat each other up.

So every other gear has a synchro, thats why you can use those gears to get the transmission lined up first and stop the gear inside, then go into reverse. Im not good at explaining sorry.

Yeah, my old Vw had no syncro on 1st gear. When I was selling it, it was an eye-opener to the buyer . :-D

I always go from second to reverse but it might be just my imagination

Or if I put it in reverse REALLY SLOW then it won't grind

Funny that you mention that - even today the VW's producd don't have syncromesh in 1st or reverse.

@ OP:
Put it in fourth...just put it in 4th like ur going to shift (but without releasing the clutch) then put it into reverse - it should go in no problem what-so-ever. As pple said - it is because of the lack of syncromesh in the reverse gear.

yup. also if it doesnt want to go in, go to neutral and let go the clutch, then put it in reverse, it will go in, sometimes it will grind. best way is to do both, neutral, let go clutch, clutch in, 4th then reverse
