i was thinking
i have all this extra room in the back of my crx, i hardly ever use it, well the other day i was driving around and something was going on at the stereo shop, they wer having this stereo competetion called dbdragracing, they had some loud cars, they had this computer that would tell you how loud the stereo was, then they would see who was loudest and do drag racing type brackets to eliminate people until just the loudest was left. a crx won the class it was in, i wonder if i put a stereo in my crx with subs and amps how loud it would be, i built a box one time a few years ago and it was nice and sounded good. and i've hooked up an amp 5-6 tims too in various cars.
do you think this would sound cool, to put like 4 12's in the or 2 15's or something and make it crazy loud, do you guys think i would have a chance against these guys since i have a small car, less room to make loud i figure. i know by looking at some of these cars i could probably do better than them

Please stop... There is no way to answer the question "do you guys think i would have a chance against these guys since i have a small car" because we have no way in hell of knowing a) who these "guys" are, b) what kind of cars "these guys" have, c) what kind of equipment "these guys" have, etc...

these guys had differant cars, one crx, a civic coupe, stuff like that, some just everyday cars, the classes go by how many subwoofers you have, like 2 12's against 2 12's, or 4 12's etc, so depending on class they have 2 12's or 4 12's, or you can do 2 15's instead of 4 12's and be in that class, or even 6 10's, you can only have 2 amps for the 2 12 class, but basically what im getting at is that if i had 2 12's and 2 amps, i'd be going against the person with 2 12's as well, you get the idea, i wouldnt have to take my 2 12's and go up against a van with bullet proof glass and 26 subs and 87 amps or anything, they have the own class for them.
so do you think this would be easy to do, i think iwill do 4 12's or 2 15's cause that will be cooler than just 2 12's. for the 4-12" or 2-15" class the were doing about 147 spl's

What's your audio background? Building a box one time and hooking up 6 amps isn't enough. You need to know how to design the box to use the car's resonant frequency to get the most output (will probably take some trial and error). In order to do that, you need to figure out your car's resonant frequency, for which you will need some measuring equipment. Are you up for it? To compete, you don't just build a box and be done with it. You have to design the whole system first; then build it.
well im going to give it a try, i should do ok i think, i may not have built too many boxes but i have built plenty of other stuff, im going to go by the shop today and talk to them more about how i will do this, and right now im going to look at some stuff online, i also found dbdragracing.com that tells the rules, they actually have a lot of classes, and differant rules and shows all over the place, so im gonna look into it a but more, even if i dont do well, at least i'll have a stereo in my car now

That's not how it works. Competition setups use ported boxes tuned around the car's resonant frequency to get the most output. If you decide to go that route, that setup will be no good for listening to music. The bass at the box's tuning frequency will be much louder than at any other frequency, and it will sound like crap. Or you can design for a flat frequency response, which will sound good, but will not get loud enough for competitions.

You're high... You know damn well that a majority of the people "trying" to compete just throw **** in their trunks and turn the volume up... There's no tuning or design involved... It's just a deck and amps and subs... The more subs the better... So the guy with six 12's will definitely beat out the people with two 10's...
So to the OP, shoehorn six 15's into your CRX and I guarantee that you'll win the prize...

I hope you have the cash to do it. That sport can be pricy. I hit 149 db and it cost a arm and a leg. Plus the time of trial and error. I used all mtx subs 9500 6-15, 6 mtx amps. 6 batteries. Me and my co-owner built this in a astro van. It took us about a month just to get it right. I really don't compete like that because of the cost of it and the time. But if your down for it go for it. Your not going to be competing against the big dogs like on dbdragracing .com. thoses guys have free gear to splurg. You will be competing against mostly garage built and young noobs. Don't take this the wrong way because I know there are some garage built out there that can rock. Start at the lowest class and work your way up so you can learn about the sport. It can be done with a sealed box but you are going to have to put extra into it. But ported is the way to go and most go this route
well heres the deal, i went and talked to the dealer, he gave me the low down on everything and some good ideas, for street classes i cant run 6 15's in there so thats out of the question, i could do 6 10's though.
he said i would need some good batteries, some really strong amps, and subs to take it, he said 6 amps and 6 10's is probably the way to go in street c, i dont know if i can buy it all at once, but i could do it in stages. i talked to a buddy of mine and he says he has some 15's he can sell me for cheap, the dealer said 6 10's was better than 2 15's for this class, but he said that he knew how to get 2 15's loud in my car too, plus then i could just start with 2 amps. he said if i do it right i could be over a 151 in that class and be around the tail end of the top 10 in the country. that would be sweet.
he said if i add more stuff later i could do even better, but to get all the way from number 10 to top 3 it was going to take some work and more equipment than 2 15's and 2 amps,
on the good side though for a local comp like i was at he said he could easily give me pointers on how to build a car that would have been in the top 3 out of all cars at that show, with only 2 subs, they had 49 cars enter that show so thats good, i think i will get started on on designing a box for the 15's and running the rca's and power wire, he said i would need some power wire and a lot of it, and some sound deadening would help to, so im gonna start on that stuff i'll need no matter what now, then start looking into amps i should buy, he said i'll need some good externally bridgeable mono block amps in the 2000 watt each range. so thats what im looking for, reading on amps on dbdragracing.com now, may get started on the rca wire and power wires later if i swing back by his shop and pick some up and then the soundeadening later
ohh he told me about another comp too called usaci so i will look into that too

If your doing it just for fun and your own enjoyment go for it.
Usually in this type of competition the more speakers the better.
As others have said your usually looking for a single frequency called the resonant frequency. So your stereo will sound like crap but you will win a DB competition.
I dont know much about the rules but they should make it so people with "usable" stereo's can compete. At least make it fun for the average joe. Thats why I find DB drags boring.

I should've said "that's not how it's supposed to work."
Just last night I was thinking how all the tv channels turned to ****. TLC (the learning channel) now teaches you what not to wear and **** like that. Discovery has a bunch of shows about building bikes (nothing about discoveries). TechTV was about computers, but all they do now is game reviews. The only channel that's still good is the history channel.
I noticed that a lot of people on here want to do stuff to their cars, but they have no idea what they are doing. For example, one guy asked how to run wire under the carpet. Some of the stuff is self explanatory, but people don't take the time to do a little research of come up with stuff on their own.
And then there's the guy that started this thread (xrccrx). He comes here and bothers everybody with his "competition setup," but then he goes to some dealer which will do all the work for him. What's the point of even asking about it here?

I'm afraid you're right. xrccrx will buy some shitty 15s from his friend, and expects to win the competition. Then again, his dealer is absolutely sure that 6 10s will be better than 2 15s. It all depends on the subs.

2000 watts is not a range. And the types of amps you would be using will depend on how many subs you have and how you wire them.

you guys dont even give a new guy a chance
02 accord you said i was going to pay a shop to do it, not the case, if you read my post closely you would have read that i was going to get started on this project by soundeadening my car and running the wires, i dont know how that sounded like i was paying this guy to do it, but im not, i was simply going there for advise on the project, just like many people come here for advise on something when there not 100% sure on something, anyway i post pics as i get started,
as for crappy 15's, these are not, i have seen them and heard them and they are no joke, they are made by a company called DD and he said the are the 9515 model.
as for 6 10's being better than 2 15's, well your right its all in the install, but what do you want, cone area right, 6 kicker 10's is 600 sq inches of cones area vs what, 350 sq inches for 2 15's so i guess we know what should be louder there if doen right huh,
you guys write me off as someone who knows nothing, that may be true, but now that makes me want to do it even more, heck someone wrote that they had 6 15's an 6 amps, well after doing more research, im pretty sure i will beat there score of 149 no problem in dbdrag, i have a good idea on my box now, 2 15's with ports frining to the back to start and about 5000 watts, now i better get to work to back up my smack talk,
your right i could pay someone to do it, but then where would the fun be, if i wanted to do that i never would have come here for advise, but then you guys just write me off as someone who you say cant do it, but i will, pics to follow, going to garage now

Don't listen to the naysayers you have just as good a chance as 99% of the rest of the people that enter local DB Drags, I have judged more then a few DB drags and more then a few times it's the guy with the box and amp that he just threw in that has won highest dB in a class.
I have seen 4 10" radio shack home speaker replacement woofers win.
Not saying you can't improve your chances with better gear and attention to install detail, especially the install, it is very important.
As for the kind of subs and sub box you use, that also depends on the install, ask the guy that ran 3dB lower SPL He had 8 12" Alpine subs in ported cabinets and 2000W RMS, got beat by a guy with 8 10" Sony Xplod subs in sealed cabinets also running 2000W RMS, the 8 10" where in a "wall o subs" the 8 12" were in banks of 4 on either side of truck, [S15] the 8 10" where in a wall, [Nissan Pathfinder] both cars had upgraded alt. extra D cell batt. and caps, [5 farads] turns out the 8 12" where canceling each other out, we disconnected one side, [4 12"] and he gained 1-2 dB's.
So go nuts, it's all about having some fun, so maybe you don't place first the first time you try, you will definitely learn something and improve the system for the next time.
Feel free to IM me if you have questions about building a dB car, that can also sound pretty good.

No. You would want cone area times excursion. SPL is the volume of air displaced, so just because you have a huge area, it doesn't mean that the smaller area (more excursion) will not be as loud or louder.
So if you really want to do your own work, start by reading the rules to find out how many subs (of each size) you can use. Then find some subs and figure out which size (10, 12, 15) will give you the most displacement. Then model them in winisd to see how much power they would need to reach their excursion limits, and then choose amps accordingly.

well here is the start, you guys probably wrote me off already and didnt think i would do it, well we took out all my rear panels and put this stuff called peel and seal back there, i guess its just like dynamat, only 10 times cheaper, we got that all done last night, it went faster than i thought, the stuff is pretty easy to do. we even had enough time so we ran 4 runs of power wire to the back, all this huge cable called 0 guage, its huge, i will need all this to be able to get enough current back there to the batteries and amps, im gonna look into getting some big *** batts today, i think i have a good idea what im gonna do for amps now too, just have to talk to a few people

the louder you get the power consumption increase exponentially. You are going to need some BIG money to get into the top 10 in the country. Dream big... but don't blow your lifes savins on something you are gonna do once. Think about it man. not to sound negative... if you want to do it! GO FOR IT!
just have fun

just have fun
here are some more pics of what ive been working on, me and me buddy staring on the box, he has won a few first place trophies doing this stuff

here is the amp i decided on, its a small company and makes a strong amp, i think i will have 2, i got good deals on these, it should do 2000+ watts
