Bad Piston Rings
You can use hastings rings or any other aftermarket piston ring that has a good rating on it.
Hastings are in my b18b and love them...I also installed them in my friends cars and holding up and sealing great.
Get whatever you can buy
both will do the job equally the same

i have put 3 different motors together using different ring everytime. they all seal the the same but the honda rings seem to last longer than the other 2 aftermarket type.

Sorry to thread-jack but when installing new rings it is neccessary to hone the cylinder bores, correct? Is this something a machine shop has to do or is it something you can DIY?

I believe honda has some sort fo a guidline that you should hone the cylinder by a hair length depending on the conditino of the cylinder wall. Ive had the same question and asked a tech at honda If the cylinder walls are scratched up in the walls then you should have it hone wiht a machine. But if its not scratched up then you can DIY by hand. im not sure what he uses but its just polishing the cylinder wall by hand. This is from i was told so, dont take my word for it.
anyone else want to chime in. I myself will need a rebuild soon summer/spring of next year i have a bad piston ring and headgasket, thats still drivalbe but im def doing headgasket in a few weeks. Im not too sure what kind of pistons i wanna use def a high compression one and defintly forged dont know how big of a bore i wanna go. I just dont want to do a rebuild again till next 120,000 miles

it is ideal when installing new rings to have a fresh hone on the cylinder wall. if there are no deep scratches then goto napa or autoparts store and buy a ball hone for the size you need. make one pass up and down to freshen up the factory cross hatches.
if there are deep scratches then the block may need to be bored then honed.

Hi the block has only done 3000kms.
Not sure why i the piston rings went bad. Im guessing not high enough octane, no tuning(standard computer) and didn't break in motor properly.
Im only asking since i got a mate that sell auto parts and can get me a deal than paying a premium for genuine ones.
Do i need to rehone the block also?
Thanks

I'd say spring for genuine Honda parts for this rebuild

I would rehone as you may have glazed down the cyl walls from an over rich condition-the new rings may not seat either....
I use one of the universal stone type hones and it works great if you keep it lubricated with wd40 while you are cutting. If you are hesitant to do it yourself take the block to a machine shop and they will do it for you for a nominal fee.
You need to get your tune right or you will be here again. It takes some friction for the rings to seat in and if you are overly rich then they may not....
