Default Hella air horns, revisited...

This was a popular mod back in the day - for those of you who still have them, how are they holding up? After a few years of riding down in the elements, my relocated horns on the Turbo Pig (one factory, one FIAMM round horn) are sounding kind of odd

If the Hellas hold up, I may have to buy a set. Let me know how yours are doing after a few years in service.

Well after lots research, I went with FIAMM horns instead of Hella horns and have had them for over a year. You can find the link here. No problems since day one, and much louder than the wussy OEM horns. They are definately cheaper too.

I just installed a set of Stebel TM80/2 horns in my type R.

It's an electromagnetic twin (hi/low) horn setup that is farkin loud, and its small emough to fit behind the bumper. Sounds almost the same as Ferrari or Mercedes horns.

They seem to be built pretty well, and I'm hoping they will last.

I kept the stock horn as well, so now when i hit the horn i can feel the pedals vibrate.

Hmm. One of the horns I have in the Pig is a FIAMM, but looks different than yours (red housing). Bought them at Pep Boys - maybe a cheaper line?

Got a link for the Stebels?

http://www.stebel.it

ITs a frames site so you have to go from the beginning. there rated at 117db from 2m i think.

Were about 40 bucks AUD so about 30 US

On a side note, I noticed my bumper didn't have any foam in it. Aren't bumpers supposed to have some kind of foam in them as a crush barrier ? or is this market specific ?

Might be US or North America only, not sure though.

yep i just confirmed it.

Aussie spec R's do not have the foam.

I guess we had to make do with the lack of foam, thinner windscreen, jdm recaro's, and jdm momo steering wheel. Life sucks

You think you have it bad?

I have to live with OEM HID's.

I have the Stebel 'Nautilus' (twin tone air horn)
http://www.speeding.co.uk/acatalog/Horns.html (6th one down on the page)

Its neat and fits in behind the bumper on the stock horn bracket and its way louder than any thing else i've tried before. Had it over a year now and never had any problems with it after i sorted out a bad ground shortly after fitting it.

Forget the Hella's. I bought the Supertones a few years ago, and they were worthless.

My vote also goes to FIAMM or Wolo horns. Get the high and low tones (2 horns), and you'll be set. ~$20 @ Pepboys or Autozone.

I have one FIAMM already, and one stock horn. One or both sounds like a dying cow from full exposure to road grime and whatnot

hungsteR,

Those FIAMM sound good. I've been meaning to replace the stock wimpy ones for a long time. Hope I can find these locally.

I bought these Wolo's from Pepboys and they sound good. I just made sure to point them at a downward angle, so they don't suck up water/dirt/etc. I had these same ones in my ITR and they worked great.

I think my friend's stock Jeep horn sounds louder. Junk yard special might be the answer for you?

hungsteR,

We don't have a Pep Boys but here in Canada but there have been these PartSource stores popping up. I'll check one of those out and the local Canadian Tire.

How about those cop horns, the ones on the Impala Interceptors the err err noise that will make you jump out of your seats. That will be cool if you can switch back and forth between two horn setups (street regular use / street pissed off use).

Figured out why my horns sound like ***...

Both of them are just half a horn

The "snail" cover of the factory horn and the "grill" cover of the FIAMM are gone. Whoops. Time for some new horns, and maybe a better place than the bottom of the splash shield (the factory location blocks flow over the intercooler).

Yes! Glad someone posted it.

I've got the Hellas sitting in a box somewhere...would like to install them some year.

Had a little time yesterday and did a FIAMM horn install. Much better than stock. Found the horns at Canadian Tire for $35 dollars.

Looks good! The Turbo Pig came with that style horn from the factory, but the location is bad. I moved them down under the splash guard. I may have to get un-chicken and take the front bumper off this weekend and throw some new ones in.
