You need a timing belt from a D16A6 (88-91 CRX/Civic Si) if you have a non-vtec SOHC ZC. If you have a VTEC SOHC ZC you need a timing belt from a D16Z6 (92-95 Civic Si). Also get the tensioner for the same motor.

First, jack up the car and get it nice and sturdy on some jack stands. Take off the driver side wheel, and remove the plastic fenderliners if you don't have access to the crank pulley. The hardest part about this job is breaking the crank bolt loose. Some air-power will break it free, or you can rig up a nice breaker bar. Once the bolt is free, undo the bolts that hold the rest of the timing cover on and remove it. Back up top you'll need to remove the upper timing cover, and unbolt the driver's side engine mount, so you can wrap the belt around it.

Remove the old timing belt by loosening the tensioner, and you can pull the belt right off. Remove the bolts holding the tensioner to the block. Install the new tensioner in its place.

MAKE 100% SURE YOU ARE ON TOP DEAD CENTER WITH CYLINDER #1 ON BOTH THE CRANK AND CAM. Stick something down the sparkplug hole if you want. Easier way is to make sure the pointer on the oil pump (which is behind the crank pulley) is pointing at the arrow on the block. The head varies a little bit depending on if you have VTEC or not, but typically the inner upper timing cover should have a pointer that you can line a mark on the gear up with. Generally the words UP on the cam gear should be facing UP (though usually not directly 90degrees up).

Once you have that all set feed the timing belt through. Around the crank pulley, up to the left of the tensioner, then over to the right of the water pump, then up and over the cam gear, back down to where you started.

Tighten down the tensioner a little bit and then crank the motor a few times by hand. Make sure you get most of the tension out of the belt w/ the tensioner (it's tricky to explain, but once you have the tensioner in your hand, you'll understand how it works). When you're done the right side should be pretty taught, and the left should have about 1 inch of deflection in it. After you've cranked it over confirm again that both the cam and crank are at TDC. If so, you're golden. Reinstall lower timing cover, crank pulley, and upper timing cover. Bolt the motor mount back in.

To set the ignition timing after the change, let the car warm up and wait for the fans to kick on. Jumper the service connector (passenger footwell 89-91, drivers shock tower 88) and turn the idle screw to get the idle down to 750 +/- 50. Hook up a timing light to spark plug wire #1 and point at the crank pulley. Line the red mark (in between two white marks) up with the pointer on the timing cover by slowly rotating the distributor backwards or forwards. Get it right on, then tighten down the distributor and you're set to go!

Vrooooom. Vrooooom.

Yeah, I'm really bored at work. Just burned a good 15min typing that up for you!
