i probably won't do it, but i was curious what you guys thought about a 96 del sol dohc vtec hauling a 700lb load (300lb trailer, 400lb sportbike). i think the owner's manual says the warranty will be void if the car is used to haul a trailer, not sure though.

ironically, i noticed they make trailer hitches for a del sol, so that got me curious.

I think sicones point is that it's unlikely you still have a manufacture's warranty on a del sol. Just about any damage done to your car wouldn't be covered.

I think the OP knows this. He is just saying that since Honda WOULD HAVE voided thee warranty by towing anything, then it wouldnt be advisable to tow something.

i dont know about warranty, but i've seen crx's around town towing small 15' boats. I'm considering buying a tow hitch for my del sol so that i can fabricate a tire tail for some r compounds

DEL SOL, rare?

 

My VX had a hitch on it when I bought it. I can tell they definitely used it cause the Input shaft bearing on the tranny MADE SO MUCH DAMN NOISE it was rediculous.

The car still shifted like butter and still does today (this is a year ago I got the car) it just makes that annoying chatter sound when you don't have the clutch depressed.

 

Yeah a black 96 DOHC VTEC Sol is very rare, not to mention finding one that isnt totally thrashed.

 

Wrong coast, otherwise I would be interested.

 

I've been doing this for years. It cracks me up when people poo poo it. I bought my 1994 Honda Del Sol S and tow hitch in May of 2007. I haul 5x8 trailers from Uhaul that weight over 1,000 lbs. plus a few hundred pounds worth of furniture. On occasion I will haul a 5x10, 700 lb trailer with a canoe in it. On the weekends, I put a kegerator on a cargo hitch and haul that to the beach. As far as I'm concerned, Honda Del Sol's are the tug boats of the road.

 

The issue is never having enough power to tow, its always the car having enough weight over the wheels to stop and not just get pushed around.

 

Big Rigs weigh less than 20,000 lbs and haul more than 40,000 lbs. They do have a long wheel base and good brakes, but it gives perspective. A Del Sol should have no problem braking with 2,000 lbs towing behind.

 

 

Do they even make a hitch for the Sol? Is it the same frame as a Civic? If so, you'll have no problem pulling 700lbs. I wouldn't go much over that (that's just me) but you should be fine. I've been towing with my EX for about 7 years now. I don't have any pics of it with towing anything (since it's so old now, no photo shoots anymore) but here it is with the hitch in action:



Rated for 1000lbs tow, 200lb tongue wt. The tires and rack were probably over the tongue weight (azenis on steelies are heavy) and have towed 500lbs without noticing it much more than a carload of people.

 

You're forgetting that a transport is designed to tow all the time, the front of the trailer sits directly over top of the 2 drive axles. You're also forgetting that the trailer has brakes. Small single axle trailers don't normally have brakes.

 

I just wouldn't tow anything in a Sol if I was you.

 

But we're not talking about a truck or transport. A decent small trailer would be balanced on the tongue of the hitch, and wouldn't load it at all. Given that, 700 lbs is within the load capacity of the car and shouldn't have a problem pulling it.

 

You're missing the point, the trailer has no brakes, it doesn't take much to push a small car all over the place. Although 700lbs is definately well in the range of what a Civic/Del Sol can safely tow.

 

What point am I missing; your second sentence agrees with what I said. If you stay within the ratings, you'll be fine... I've done it myself many times.

 

I think as long as you take it easy, and try to stay away from any large hills you should be ok.

My freind used to tow his race bike to the track with his civic all the time with only one problem. He couldnt make it up the last hill if he got caught at the light. He would need to hit the hill at 35-40mph.

 

you also have to be smart about loading the weight and stopping, give yourself extra stopping distance whenever possible, and put 60% of the weight in front of the trailers axle so the trailer doesn't fishtail like crazy... atleast that is what i learned when i worked at uhaul two years ago
