Default Ideal for Gas

While I am doing my CRX project Im going to start a hatchback project but I want to do this car up for gas mileage. Obviously a SOHC will be the pick, but which one. D15, D16... I heard theres a EG that has 3 stage vtec, I think VX that is good for gas? Just want your opinions on which is better. I know I will be using a HF Tranny, already got it!

Thanks

JDM D15B is the 3 stage vtec. also the D15Z1 has vtec-e witch is like a HF motor at 60 hp then when vtec kicks in it hits 92 hp like a DX motor. it is MPFI
