94 Civic EX D16Z6 Vtec not working? No cel light

Default 94 Civic EX D16Z6 Vtec not working? No cel light

I'm hoping someone can help sheld some light on a little problem. I recently read a couple of posts about a vtec light. I did the mod, hooking the positive from the light to the green with yellow strip wire going into the ecu. One catch, mine had two different green w/ yellow wires. I tested both. One of which made the light come on with the key in the ignition and turned to accessories, once I started the car it went out and never came back on. I reved the car upwards of 6500 and still nothing. Took the wire out and hooked it to the other green w/ yellow wire. Did not come on with key in, and never came on at high revs.

To my knowledge vtec should kick in around 4500, 5500 on some engines. I have a D16Z6 SOHC VTec.

Does anyone have any ideas as to watch I can possiblly check to make absolute sure it is not engaging? What might cause it to go out but NOT display a cel?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Well, the reason that its not engaging when you are revving the motor, is because its not designed to.

If you drive it, and it doesnt engage, thats another story. But I THINK most factory ECU's dont engage until the car reches 15-20mph.

check your oil pressure and if theres is any oil in there at all

Yes there is plent of oil, just changed it recently and checked it today. I was driving the car reving around 6000 in 2nd gear. Still did not engage. There are no check lights on either, no oil light or cel.

Any other ideas?

Only thing I can think of would be wiring, but to my experience, that would tell me that it would throw a code.

Only thing I would be able to tell you is to scan the computer for past codes that MAY have gone missed.

well from what i notice in mine too, is that mine kicks in at 4500. is that normal for the vtec's back in the day?

Yea the 4500 is normal and that it where mine should kick in.... but nothing

Na no codes jumped the ecu plug to check and it shows me nohting

Not sure if you can or can't I've heard you can hear it..... but I've never actually heard or felt it kick in... I installed a light to tell me when it kicks in. To tell you the truth I don't know if it has ever worked on this car. Thats why I'm posting this I wanna know how I can check and see if it is actually working.

the engine is a bit smoother in a VTEC powerband, you won't hear it though. :sigh: VTEC fad...

You'd probably cry with a GSR, you don't feel it at all, but you know its there because of power gain

with a sohc...you can hear it if you listen very very carefully, and you can noticed it if you really pay attention to it...but its so little that most the time you dont even know its there...

I have a d16z6 in my '94 hatch as well and VTEC kicks in around 5500. With SOHC engines, VTEC really isn't all that loud unless you install a CAI. I don't really feel a kick when it engages but I know for sure that it does.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!

You CAN hear vtec if you listen very closely.... I had the light tapped into the wrong wire... THANK GOD FOR CHILTONS MANUALS!!! My vtec silanoid wire was orange with a white stripe.

I am kinda disapointed though my vtec kicks in at 5000 rpm I was hoping for 4500. I can notice now that I know for sure it is kicking in that the power IS much smoother with vtec engaged. I wish they had something for the lower end of the spectrum.

Well I guess you figured it out. I just noticed mine in those rpms because it seems smoother and the rpms get down a little quicker than usual. I don't really hear my vtec, my car is stock, so nothing to notify me when it kicks in.
