Default 205/40/17 not wide enough???

Specs:

5th gen
17x7.5 45mm offset

Now will some 205/40/17 tires be too narrow for my wheels? Dam the price of some 215/40/17 is sooooo much more than some 205's. Can I live with the 205's since the car is only for the streets.

205/45/17 is fine. 205/40/17 is too short and the load rating isn't high enough. the edges of your rims will be exposed and it will be easier to damage them with either 205 width tire though. I run 215/40/17 and the sidewalls are flush on a 7.5" wide rim.

and seriously, I see 215/40/17 tires for $100/ea all the time . . . you need to look elsewhere if the prices are too steep in that size

what tires are you looking at and what are the prices you're being quoted?

those are too much for me, I just need some tires to roll around. Next year I plan on getting some light 16's and really pricey tires.

The SPT's are $89 each (free shipping) from discounttiredirect.com Even if you have to pay the local shop $30 a tire to mount and balance, that's still only $120/tire which is very reasonable for a 17" performance tire!

**** . . . are they asking like $25 per tire for the 205/40/17s on some crazy summer sale? I can't imagine a $90 difference . . .

$88 is not a good enough reason to run the wrong size tire with a load rating that is unsafe. borrow the money, work an extra day or two. ****, sell performance parts off your car - tires are the last thing you want to skimp on.

or just get a more affordable set of all-season tires in the correct size

Fuzion HRi are dirt cheap, comfortable, and not the worst performing tire I've ever driven on. If the 17s are a temporary thing, I'd go with those. Think I paid $70 each shipped from tiresavings.com
