Default free air 8"

Ok so in the back of my car i have 2 5x7s with a plastic tray in between them. underneath the tray is nothing but the trunk. I was thinking about adding a 8" free air into that tray. i did the whole 2 12s, 1/0 power wire, take up the whole trunk thing back in high school, i just want a little more bass. I have never done free air other then 5x7s and 6x9s so what do you guys think?

Just make sure you buy a speaker that is free capitable. One good choice is the kicker. http://www.kicker.com/06/kicker_home.html. Make sure the speaker is mounted to a firm baffel. Also make sure the trunk is well sealed. Also make sure the front of the speaker is sealed from the back. Which means your going to have to make sure the front waves can not come into contact with the rear waves. So you trunk is going to have to be sealed from the cab of the car.

im aware of sound cancellation that happens when the pressure levels equalize. I cant do much about the rear seats unless i turn the trunk into a box which i don't want to do. if I reinforce that plastic rectangle tray with a piece of metal of MDF or something do you think that will be enough?

no metal, mdf will be perfect. It does not have to be 100% sealed. Just close enough to keep the waves from meeting. It will sound good. what king of car is it?

I agree with wrx-killer-Sti eater but I will add, you must seal the back of the 5x7s or they will just become passive radiators for the sub. 94

I can see how that would happen... perhaps it would be easier to just make a small sealed box for the 8"

I dont think i can fit a 10" in that small space. perhaps a kicker 10, that would be like a 10 right? 10" circle (3.14 x 5 x ^2) is about 8" square? I dont know... I just got back from some club and I am soooooooooooo toasted. there was this girl there, oh so hot! I tried to catch her but she got to the door and left before i could do anything. AHHH!!! anyway... yeah

With the trunk i have I could put 4 ported 15's and still have some room left over for the groceries. I'm a little short on money right now and will be for the next 2 months or so. I just want something to get me by for now. the stock 6x9s don't give all that much bass but perhaps some aftermarket ones would be a better route then an 8. any recommendations?

OK what are the 5x7s or 6x9s?
Either way, find a set of 5x7 or 6x9 mid bass drivers add an amp, or find a good set of 5x7s/6x9s 2ways and disable the tweeters and add the amp and you should be good to go. 94

The 6x9 MBs would work, [again not using the tweeters] but the Q 216 sig. would be better up front, although they would require a custom MDF speaker housing as they are "over-sized" 6.5" speakers and would also need an amp to drive. 94

i just cant justify spending $750 on a pare of speakers. $200 is pushing it unless its a sub

you havent heard QSDs if you cant justify spending that much on speakers then. That is what I have in my prelude. You will need a rather large amp to push them. I have a 3 way qsd component set with a 200wrmsx2 and 100wrmsx4 quart amps pushing them, they are triamped. MB Quart speakers love power especially the Q line.
why not do this instead in your back deck http://www.mbquart.com/en/prod...f_164
it is just mid-bass so you wont waste any money on the tweeters that come with the rce-269s.

yeah so?! those 6.5s w/o the tweeter look good and all but its a little more $ then im ready to spend right now. Im an audiophile 100% but im still short on $ at the moment. I may go for those QSDs after i get back from the desert when i have money to blow.

For the price, I would stick with Sony. I spent only $80 on a pair of 6x9 Sony Xplod speakers, and I get 20Hz to 20kHz frequency response with <0.1% THD, 80W RMS, and distortion-free sound, coupled with an ultra-strong polypropylene woofer cone that can stand up to serious abuse. You can run a 60W RMS 4-channel amp on the Sony Xplod speakers without disabling the tweeter or supertweeter, and still get good sound quality. Also, the 6x9 Sony Xplod speakers have a 2" mounting depth, so you can mount them in tight spaces
