Default Steel Tires?

Some of these recent threads have gotten me thinking... Why not race on steel tires?

They wouldn't have air in them, so you don't have to worry about pressure fluxations and stuff like that. They would be really down low in the car, so it should handle better because of the lower center of gravity. It would make a great heat sink if it is close enough to the calipers to conduct the brake heat...

You have to admit, it's a lot more economical because they won't wear at all, so one set will last practically the entire season. They also won't leave track buggers, so if everybody uses them, the whole track will stay clean the whole time!

It seems to make a lot of sense, no?

actually I heard of some japanese drift teams and endurance racing teams doing some testing using ferrous based metal matrixed tires. Interesting concept. I wish we werent always so behind in the USDM, id love to get my hands on some of these. Really puts meaning to the phrase "wears like iron" !

ps- bookler likes little boys

not if the track was re-paved in steel too...

oh, and before you ask about unsprung weight, I'm removing the springs so there won't be anymore sprung/unsprung issues.

Cool idea! You would want heavy steel wheels because you want to keep all the momentum as possible since our cars tend to be momentum cars.

Hey...make the damn track surface out of electro-magnetic material .

Throw away your wings, splitters, (jack, impact wrench, air tank, tire gauge, shocks, springs, sway bars, etc).

When control throws a red flag, the stewards turn the track "off" and everybody just spins out into the grass .

More rotating mass
Feels a lot like momentum
That's good for our cars

How about mounting steel tires on rubber wheels?

Temperature dependent springrate... hmm... I'll have to think about that for a while. I'm not sure if I want the springs getting softer as the race goes on, but that may cause issues with "bumpsteer."

Oh sure, you don't have to worry about tire pressures and compounds anymore, but now you're fretting over carbon content, heat treatment procedures, policing illegal alloying compounds, and you know all the big bucks teams will be running the uber-expensive, "high momentum" deplur cores.

might as well jsut drive on the brake rotors, lower center of gravity, better gearing, less weight, what more could u ask for?

all that extra weight on the wheels, then youd really have some blown bushings. . .

IBTL!
