bad rack?
when the car is off the ground and I grab a wheel and move it right to left(as if the steering wheel were moving right and left) I get a slight bit of play. I know it's not the tie rod ends because I relaced those recently.
If you sit in the car and turn the wheel right to left it will go about 1/4 of an inch in either direction before the wheels start to move. I know it sounds like an inner tie rod problem but I assure you it's not.
What does it sound like to you guys? Do you think I should try a steering rack adjustment or do you think it's toast? Think it's something else? Let me know I'm open to suggestions here.

sounds like a clunk.
a more direct way of diagnosing it is turning the steering wheel all the way to the left, grabbing the end of the rack and pushing up and down. that will tell you the condition of the rack end bushing.
if theres any play, then it needs to be replaced. i can 100% guarantee you if the boot is torn, then it needs to be replaced.
the other thing to do is adjust the steering gearbox pinion. that should be done along with the rack end bushing.
whats the rack end bushing?

other thing to do is to make sure the axle nut is torqued down properly. at least 130 ft-lbs. and then slowly rotate the tire and feel for the condition of the wheel bearing. youll know it if theres any rough spot(s).

Yeah the end rack bushing was replaced when I replaced the inner tie rod ends. I originally thought this was an inner tie rod problem and it wasn't. Axle nuts are definetly tight, and the wheel bearings are fairly new also(I had this problem before they were replaced)
I've brought this up before and I've been told to check the rack end bushing, which I've replaced before. I've rechecked for play in the rack due to the end bushing(the turning the wheel thing and shaking up and down) no play.
So I guess it's time to adjust the gearbox. Thanks Tyson
