just wanted to make sure..
when removing and installing airbags, is the only precaution i need to take disconnecting the battery to avoid them from deploying?

yes sir....
disconect the battery then let it sit for at least 30 min...power is stored in the air bag control moudule for up to 30 min so they could deploy when your disconecting it....i deal with air bags all the time.
