Default n00b Checking In.

Hey Everyone,

I just got my first bike this past Saturday. I only have my permit right now. I've looked into the MSF (BRC) courses but they're booked until the end of September and I'm eligible for my license at the end of August.

The bike is a 1999 CBR 600 F4. It has 21,000 miles on it. The previous owner replaced the tires, brakes and lines at 19,000 miles. It looks pretty damn good for it's mileage to be honest. I paid $3500 for it which I thought was a fair deal in my area (VA).

Hope you like it!

Any tips or advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Also, if there are any meets in the NoVA area or if anyone wants to go for a ride in a month or so, lemme know.

congrats on the new bike.

well you'll find yourself at home if youre from NoVa, sooo many NoVa rides.

I'll be the first to say it, get gear and take the MSF course (which you plan on doing anyways).

You got a great beginner 600, thats for sure. Just respect the bike, take it slow, never ride above your head, and be safe.

from a fellow GDD member, congrats.

my only suggestion is buy the best gear you can. whether you can afford it or not buy the best gear possible. the gear will save your life.

good luck, have fun, be careful and aware.

Don't run out of gas long way from home. My friend said he had to pull the tank just to add fuel to jets.

Always check your tire pressure and brakes before going!

I don't have any equipment just yet since I'm not riding yet.

This is the jacket I want to get. I tried it on and it's very protective and fits me perfectly in XL but mainly it's ******* cool: http://www.motorcycle-supersto...ion=1

I dunno which helmet, boots or gloves yet.

I have the textile timax jacket, man that thing rocks. I crashed in the gravel and the jacket only got one scratch, hardly visible. I'm sure the leather one is nice, maybe a little hot sometimes, but they have removable liners. As for gloves, i have alpinestars. awesome gloves. Go to your local shop and try on some helmets though, thats the most important piece of gear.

How much should I expect to pay for a helmet? I went to a local shop and they ranged from like $150-$300. But then the dude I bought the bike from said he paid $600 for his helmet. I defintely don't want to buy a POS helment but I don't want to spend $600 either. Will $300 afford a quality helmet?

It all depends on how comfortable the helmet is. If you search (remember to search the archives) you'll find several rather lengthy discussions here about what the variations are, what you're paying for, and all that some such.

Well, some people here will say the usual, HJC is crap, Icon is okay, and Arai is god. But personally, IMO, if its DOT and SNELL approved its safe enough for me. I spent $400 on my helmet and its an HJC AC-12. I love it, and it looks killer (Carbon Fiber) and I think I got my moneys worth.

I think the motorcycle forum is just a SoCal vs. NoVa forum, but we all happen to own motorcycles.

People that are different are bad.

*edit*

Did I just agree to barter my sister on the internet?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to hell for that one.

also be sure to check your inspection, registration, etc. Getting pulled over on a bike sucks, just happened on the way home

Where are you supposed to carry the registration on the bike itself, or in your wallet?
