Default type r key

i know this really isnt important, but when i got my jdm i only got the spare key,ie. just black plastic top on the key.

is it possible to order a new key,the one that has type r on it,or even get another spare just in case anything ever happens to the one i have?

also im wondering would it be best to go through a main dealers or another importers for it?

thanks in advance lads.

Any Acura dealership can get the key for you. I believe only 1998 ITRs came with the "special" key though.

What about the '97?

I know the 2000-2001 came with the key with the immobilizer chip in it, so the gray key won't work.

The gray Type R key will work with both 97 & 98 ITRs, but not the 00-01.

The 97 & 98 Keys came with the Type R logo, were grey, and had the polished logo. In 99 (in Canada), they came out with the immobilizer, and in 2000-2001 there were immobilizers in all the type R keys.

Hope that helps.

Just curious why is this? The key will physically fit into the key cylinder and interchange. Perhaps you might have it reversed? The gray Type R Key will not work with the 00-01 models because they do not have the transponder chip inside of them.

That's what I meant. You can't use the gray Type R key in 00-01 models because of the lack if immobilizer chip.

I'm sure he's just referring to the fact that:

It was cheap, I didn't get the ITR key because to be honest I thought it was fake, just something that the previous woner had gotten made. I got a regular key cut at my dealer for like 5 bucks.

The gray Type R key is the same as the pre-mobilizer key for any other Honda/Acura car.

If your car is pre-'99, you can buy a key and have it cut at any hardware store or locksmith. Most of them carry blank keys for major brands of cars. And yes, it will cost you $5-10.

well i got it sorted today.
went to honda but since the car is a jdm import, they could'nt get me a type r key since the vin is'nt registered here.
so basicly they sent me to a locksmiths in the city center who cut me a new spare for €10.

happy enough with the out come,at least im sorted now in case anything happens to the key the car came with.

thanks again everyone for your help, much appreciated

The fake ones on ebay are 99.99% identical to the authentic JDM keys, as i have an original JDM key and bought an ebay one for $12 and there is no difference in them.

Original key is on top and un-cut ebay key at bottom

My key looks something like the top key (please excuse the MS paint job ):

It has the same indentation as your key. I think your grey paint just rubbed off, as mine is chipping in a few spots and showing the shiny surface beneath it.

might want to edit your key code out of that picture as that is all someone would need to cut a key to open your doors and turn on your ignition.
