floating caliper vs radial fixed caliper
Well feela's I'm doin a little brake upgrade on my track car...
I am upgrading from a set of OEM 5 lug ITR calipers to a new set of 4 piston brembo units off of a new 05' TL with the sports package. It is going to give me another 0.5-1" of rotor, a bigger pad, and a few extra pistons to disrtibute the force a little more equally...
Now someone just pointed out to me that I am switching from the conventional floating caliper design to a radial fixed design. The new caliper has been shaved a little to mount up flush with the Knuckle and give the right spacing and clearance for the rotor and wheel. I am also drilling my caliper mounting holes on the Knuckle to accomidate the bigger bolts that come standard with the bigger calipers.
I didn't think this swap would cause any issues but I figured I'd ask and see if anybody has any input on the subject...
here's a picture for anybody who is interested...

and just incase anybody is interested the car is being built with mostly time trails in mind, so you don't need to worry about the rules and regulations jive

because the caliper has 4 pistons, two on each side of the rotor, the caliper shouldnt be "floating". as long as youve got the rotor centered in the caliper, the pistons will center itself.
its the way its designed on the TL anyway.

I'm currently running a 1" ITR MC and Booster, I don't know of anything bigger that might work... I'll have to see if I can't find out what size the TL MC is...
With the ITR calipers, braided lines, and some Cobalt Sport pads the car was already pretty touchy and the pedal barely moved. So with everything else the same and just the front calipers being upgraded, hopefully it will give me a little better modulation, and maybe a little better pad life...

How many sets of brake pads did your car go through in one day at the track, before?

my usage has never been bad, I just figured that was a little added bonus...
plus I got the big boy K24 going in so I fgured now that I got the power might as well make sure I got the brakes...

Oh, I just figured it was an issue since you mentioned it.
Who makes good pads for the 05+ TL calipers?

I looked at the Cobalt GT sports since I liked them on the ITR calipers, and they have them...
I'll have to go back and see exactly which one's it was but these calipers are the same Brembo's on the STI, EVO, or 350... or 2 of the three...
So good pads shouldn't be a problem

It is the same caliper exactly or just uses the same pads?
I'm interested in perhaps using these TL calipers if they can be made to fit the Honda spindles without too much trouble.

TL/STI/EVO are all the same
here is the original thread...

I'll be doing a write up soon, hopefully get them on today. Then I will try and take some good pics and describe all the modifications neccesary and the different ways it can be done...
