Howdy again. Had great luck on this forum a while back re: 15" wheel upgrade on '96 Honda Civic DX. Same car, different problem.

Check Engine Light on, code analysis yields 71, which translates as Cylinder #1 dead. Car runs like sh*t, definitely missing.

What is the recommended way to proceed with diagnosing/solving this problem? Cylinder #1 is the one closest to the pulleys (driver's side), correct?

I have the green Honda service manual, it references (page 11-103) fuel injector, plugs, wires, distributor, low compression, valves (in that order). Is there one particular thing that usually causes this issue, or should I proceed with the book as Gospel? Car has 190k miles on it.

check the gap if tyhe pulg looks good

supposedly... it's debateable though... some say it interferes with the plug ground... I've gone without for years and with for a few. Only difference is more crap on the threads...

 

owner reports new (unknown quality) plugs, cap, rotor and wires installed 3.18.03 (almost three years ago), car is driven a lot.

i actually have one of those stethoscopes somewhere (for listening to injector go "click click") but i think its in storage and unavailable (of course) - is there any other way to check injector function besides swapping them around? trying to do this over the weekend...

on an american iron block v8 (my vice) you would be foolish to install plugs without anti-sieze, that's how plugs get rounded off

 

Checking back because of yet another problem - I forgot to mention that new plugs, wires, and rotor solved this missing on #1 issue.

It's like working on a sewing machine, but I like it.
