I have an '87 CRX Si that I bought for $250 a week ago. The original owner lost the key, so I went to the dealership to have a new one cut. Well, the guy cutting the keys said he couldn't cut the key by the VIN code alone because it is an '87. I did some searching, and the code was brought up, but there's no mention of it's exact placement. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking? It's a 4 digit code, and I removed the steering column covers and looked at the ignition switch, and never found a code. All the locks are original, so I just need to get this key cut.

 

I have a four-digit code on my key for the car...I dunno where else it would be though.

 

I think buddy was jus bein lazy at work. What he needs to do is log onto Honda Interactive site at the dealership. Enter the vin and it will generate the proper keycode.. he needs to take that code and enter it into the keycut machiene they should have in parts dept. there n your key will be cut. If not calla lockssmith they will cut one and since it doesnt need to be programmed at all your car should start rite up!

 

Thanks boost. I'm gonna go in there tomorrow and see why he can't look this code up.

We all know this is correct procedure for the 88+ cars...you're sure this applies to pre '88 cars as well? The way I read the post is that it doesn't work that way BECAUSE its an '87.

 

Well, I'll stop by the dealership and find out either why he can't cut it, or where the location is of this code. I'll update when I have more info.

 

Alright, the final verdict is... they can't make a key for anything pre-'92. At least not the dealerships around here anyway. Looks like I gotta call a locksmith.

 

I had two keys made for my car(90crx) last year. I think after like 15years Honda takes the codes out of the computer?

 

I recently bought an '87 Sedan from a boneyard--it was an abandoned vehicle so it didn't have any keys.

I took one of the door lock cylinders (took 15 minutes to remove--had to get into the door anyways to fix window regulator) down to a local locksmith--he looked up something on his computer and made a key which worked perfectly--and it was $13 IIRC so less than I expected it to be. The door lock cylinder did have a number on it, but I think it may have been longer than four numbers.

Call around to find a locksmith and verify that they can do this for your car before driving around. The locksmiths in my area have short, weekday-only hours, and a lot of them don't deal with cars this old anymore. Most of the ones in the phone book are the mobile ones where they come get into your locked car--it's hard to figure out what their physical location is at (if they even have one) but I'm pretty sure their minimum charge is something like $50-75, and I didn't want to pay that much just to get a key made.

To show my ignorance, I forgot that the Honda only uses one key (I have had so many cars, many of which had two keys), so when I first got the car, I drilled out the ignition lock cylinder and popped it out, figuring that I was going to have to get a new lock cylinder/key for it. Only after I got the 'door' key made did the light bulb come on and I realized that I could have used this same key for the ignition--D' op!

The other option is finding another parts car which has keys and swap all of the locks over to your car--you can pop out the ignition lock cylinder (with key in it, turned one click to the right I think and then push in on steel pin underneath), but the door cylinders require a bit more time to change. It's not hard, but just takes time.

 

Yeah, I've already popped out the cylinders (with the exception of the ignition switch) yesterday. I didn't find the numbers, but I remember seeing about 8 small nicks in line on the cylinders. I'm gonna rub a pencil over them and try to transfer them to paper to see if they are just really small numbers. If all else fails, I talked to a locksmith yesterday who said he could make one if I dropped the ignition off at his shop. So we'll see how all this plays out.

 

87 and older uses a different key machine from the 88-00 keys. we have that machine but everytime i cut one i manage to mess it up. i leave it for the elders here to do that for me

but if they dont have the cutter then you are out of luck at that dealer.

but it takes 10 seconds (literally) but i do need proof of ownership and insurance in order to cut.
