Hi,

I have gotten some sap on my car from a large pine tree, mostly on the windshield/driver side window. I removed it from the windows using nail polish remover, which worked very well, but something i would never let touch the paint.

Now on the paint i have a few spots where it has actually dried, and its not gooey anymore, its white colour and its hard..
Ive tried goo gone, tar and sap remover, and warm water. I got most of it off.. But in some spots there still almost an outline of the sap, or a little bit of sap left.

Got any ideas on what i could try? I was told to try reducer.. But i think that may hurt the paint.

Any ideas?

Once i get it all clean again, im going to start using a car cover since my only parking is under a big old pine tree. Usually i get it off as soon as it drips and it comes off easily with some goo gone, but latley since ive been working out of town its hard to keep it off.

Now this may be total b.s. but I would imagine that because it is above the clearcoat you would be able to wetsand it down a little and then wax it back up to build the clearcoat back up. Don't try it unless someone else says its alright, I think I just heard that somewhere.

 

Try goin to your local automotive paint supply shop I used Wax and Grease remover and it worked fine without damaging the Paint on my Black 87 Pontiac GTA

 

WD-40 and it does hurt ur paint IT WORKS ON ALOT OF THINGS

 

Ok, so WD40 is first on the list, the others i will try as a last resort, kinda looking for simple solutions.

I know most bodyshops have their own secerts anyways that they usually wont give out.

 

acetone? sp? works great on painted surfaces.

 

Buy Goo-Gone. It's a product made from orange extract specifically to remove adhesives. Completely paint safe...it'll even take crayon off of a painted wall. I used to use it when I worked at a vinyl sticker shop. You can find it at AutoZone and/or WalMart.

i've heard that de-natured alcohol works well, but will require a wax or buff afterward to make the clearcoat look normal again.

 

Try a product called PrepSol. Can get it at most paint supply stores in quart sized cans, might even find it at AutoZone/Pep Boys, etc... It will strip wax off so you'll have to reapply wherever you use it.

I've also had good luck with Mequires Cleaner products. Goes on like a liquid wax, removes surface contaminates while you rub it in, polishes out scratches after it dries and you buff it out.

Didn't see that part. But if the Goo Gone isn't working, you either aren't using it correctly or you're just not using enough of it.

 

when i had sap on my car i used Meguiar's clay bar. it comes as a set with quick detail. all i did was spray in a spot, clay bar the spot until you can't feel any more bumps or "popping" as the instructions say.then wipe off. it takes some time and you might need to do the area once or twice as i did it 3 times b/c i let the sap sit for a really long time but its worth it in the end.

 

goog gone got fiberglass resin off my hands in no time it burned alot tho cuz im a noob and didnt read the instrustions for the fiberglass on the back.

i second that

 

that stuff mentioned that smelled like gasoline, probably was in fact gasoline, I was in professional auto detail for some years and dealerships, mobile detailers, and shop detailers, always used gasoline on things like tar, and sap. it does damage paint, but it would take a considerable amount of fluid and time to do so, wipe on, scrub off, wet sand any fine scratches if the paint is that nice.

the goo gone and such those things have other chemicals in them, I would do gasoline first.

 

well, i notice theres a few types of goo gones etc. The stuff i have is in a clear bottle and the stuff is a yellow colour, smells nice. It dosent work all that good on old sap, new sap works excellent never damages paint..

However i have used another type of 'goo gone' before, that worked well on old sap.. But i cant find it, this kind came in a little metal tin bottle and was a clear colour.. I think thats the original stuff, ill have to find it again. I used it before and it scratched the clear coat in a few spots ( i rubbed it with paper towel ).. But i thinkj the towel scratched it, this time i will be sure to use a microfiber cloth (expensive) but worth it if the paint stays ok shape.

So yeah, ill try some wd-40 and see if it works.. Ill use it very lightly, in the few spots, if no luck im gonna search for the type of goo gone i had used before.

The car will be getting a meguiers 3 stage, clean/polish/wax after the sap is removed and the car is cleaned/dry, so this will help get the car uniform looking again..

So yeah, thanks for the ideas guys..

- going to try to get the brand i had before that worked better
- going to try wd 40 first
- car will get a meguiars 3 step clean/polish/wax after.
