JDM H22A gurus look inside different years different rods??? Picture!
I dissembled my 93 JDM H22A engine after spining a rod bearing. I got another set of JDM H22A rods and pistons from a friend I believe they were obd1 as well. After looking at the 2, looks like mine on the left is smaller then the rod on the right. The rod on the right looks beefer and a stronger piece??? It got me thinking as well...maybe these rods are H23? the rod set on the right also has previsions for oiling orfice in the rod and mine on the left don't makes me think these may be H23 rods?

the really old school h22s, i think from 91, had the thicker rods, marked P13. then after that they switched to the p13z rod which is thinner
the length is all the same, just seems like the P13 rod is a bit beefier. i;m guessing honda switched cuz they saw they can get away with a thinner lighter rod w/o negative effects? who konws, heh

wierd...the rod on the right the new set also has an oil passage through the rod into the rod bearing...makes me also wonder if the 91 has oil squirters also...
I noticed 91-92 blocks have no mappy on TB as well as I didn't see any intake mani brace...

Yeah theres definately a difference... I got several of them laying at home.
The P13 looks to be as beefy as an H23 (PT3) when side by side, but yeah its the same length as the P13Z
I actually bought a set off a kid on here and when I got them I had two of each rod
Didnt really matter cuz I just wanted the pistons but I was like WTF?

The pin also looks pressed on the left and floating on the right, which would make the one on the right newer (later model) I think. Are the pistons the same apart from the pin? I've read that the JDM Type S had beefier rods.
still trying to find out...the newly acquired rods on the right have an oil passage going through it to the rod bearing? this mean rod bearing needs to have a hole too or? special bearings???
I think bearings normally have that hole in there anyways.
The caps are much meatier on the P13 as well... I would be interested to know the weight differences.

Are you saying the rod bearing has an oil hole or the rod itself has a hole? If you are talking about the rod, where does this hole go? Does it just go out the side of the rod like a H23 rod, or does it go all the way up through the center of the rod to send oil to the wrist pin? Also, the beefier rod has a bronze bushing in the pin bore, whereas the smaller one does not... correct?

the P13Z has no oil holes whatsoever, and the P13 (the beefier one) has one like the H23.
Both of mine were press fit when I took them apart, but that doesnt mean that there isnt another version out there.

both rods have the OEM looking bearing in them with that special honda signature h inside a circle??? also rod bearing numbers on the right one is 1k050 and on the left is 3ko2e. The one on the right has a hole for the oil in the rod bearing...I don't think honda would know about the numbers since it's a jdm thing...
I called Collective Racing and Pocket Rockets and both think it's an H22 rod, and Pocket Rockets say that some of the H22 rods did have a oil passage. They both think its H22. As the years went on i guess the rods got thinner as well...

thats not true. i've taken apart several 92s and 94s, jdm and usdm, and they mostly had the thinner p13z rod.
the thicker p13 rod is more rare, probalby only came across it 1-2times on several jdm motors.
