Need help with a water leak in my 90 crx HF
Hi, everybody. I've done a lot of work on other cars in the past, but the most I've done to my 1990 crx HF is taking off the valve cover and adjusting the valves.
I've developed a very bad water leak. The car is up on jackstands right now. I refilled the radiator and it started to leak from the driver side of the engine. I went under the car to see where it's coming from. It's dripping from a bolt right next to the alternator, but it SEEMS to be coming from somewhere above that and running along the edge of the plastic cover, then running over to that bolt where it starts to drip.
My first thought was, "Wonderful, a head gasket." I checked the oil, and thankfully there is no water in it.
Any ideas? Thanks for the help, Don.
PS. Would somebody please tell me which engine this car has? Thanks.

Check the hoses back there for cracks and leakage... i'd crawl underneath the car and look up at it.
As for the engine type, look at the plate on the front of the block. Open hood, look down past the exhaust header, towards transmission, there's a flat piece of the block, read it (might have to de-oil it with a rag and spray first).

Yeah, it's stock. I guess the "15" in the engine designation must be referring to the crankshaft horsepower rating.
If it was any slower, it would go backwards. It surely does get good mileage, though, and it's usually very cheap to own.
I've checked the hoses, which are all on the passenger side of the engine. None are leaking. It seems to be coming from somewhere around the plastic cover.
Is the water pump behind the plastic cover? Do I have to pull the crank pulley to take off the bottom part of the plastic cover on the driver side of the engine?

yes the pump is below the cover, and yes you have to take off the crank pulley to remove it. also check behind the block there is a metal water pipe that runs across the back of the block, it might be leaking from that as well

OK, next question. How do I remove the pulley? I've got the driver side wheel off so I can see in there, so I can't set it down to get the wheels on the ground to keep the engine from spinning when I try to turn the nut on the end of the crank. If I put the wheel back on, I won't be able to access the nut on the pulley. Also, will I need a puller for the pulley?
Why, after many good years of service from this car, do I feel like I should approach it while walking towards it backwards and bent over? Somehow, I have a feeling that I may finally be gong to get hosed by this car. It's not bad enough that i also have to replace the alternator due to the bearing in it going bad. That was nearly $100, now I'm wondering what I'm getting into with this. We'll see, I guess.
