Default smoke + smell

So, on the way home from my scholarship retreat, my car starts to smell. My girlfriend and I thought it was just the environment ,so we ignored it. After about a minute of driving, the smell was still there. A few minutes later, the smell died. Then, another few minutes later, a big BOOM! went off and smoke was coming out of the middle vent (don't know about the other vents). I threw it into neutral and let my car glide to the next exit. What could be wrong?

Another thing is, my car burns oil, so I know that I was low on motor oil. I parked and had some motor oil brought to me. My questions are (1) is my car still driveable and (2) what the expletive blew? I am scared to drive my car, so any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

a similar sitution happened to me. was driving, got smoke through my a/c vents. couldn't figure out the problem. a couple of days later, i got a boom as well, still was drivable (barely). decided to open up the motor up and come to find out i broke a piston. appearently a ring was bad causing the piston to eventually break.

maybe it's the same problem your having. definately it's oil related since you stated that you were low on oil.

All this happened at once, the smoke and the boom. My car seems to be running normally after adding some motor oil. How does a car run when a piston is broken/blown?
