CALLING ALL H-T MEMBERS!!!
To start off I live in Illinois. Thats the big problem. I just took my car for the dreaded emissions test. My car is a 2000 civic hatch with a b16a in it. I am obd1 and I cant pass the obd scanner test. I told the place that it wasn't going to work and just give me the exhaust test, but they said if I fail the obd test I fail emissions. So of course they couldn't read the obd1 so I failed. What am i going to do. I need to pass. Is there anyway I can make the ecu readable to pass the test??
Help please. Thanks.
Help please. Thanks.
damn man i hope u fix that but im glad i live in jersey we dont go thru all that bullshit..but BUMP this to the top, the man needs the car in the streets..
Man guys you got no idea. I no the car is fine to thats what sucks. I blow out no smoke, i have no CEL on, The car is legal. But nooooo I fail because i'm obd1!

that just doesn't make any sense. there are tons of obd1 non tuners out there and they fail you because of that. is there another area where you can have the inspection done?

Has to do with the car's body year, for '95 and below there's no emissions nor ODB check, for 96+ there is. So if you take a 99 body like he has, they have to scan for ODB-II, which is impossible for him since he has an ODB-I setup.. My advice..find a garage who you can throw 50 bucks instead of the typical 30 for an inspection and make it pass... You can get around the whole ODB deal but you need to have 2 vehicles and a garage willing to basically give you an inspection sticker... Though it's illegal so I wouldn't just go around asking about it... The only non-illegal way around it is to swap the engine out and put an ODB-II engine/ECu in there for the inspection, the other way (which I don't know if it's possible) is see if you can convert the engine/ECU to ODB-II - I've never seen an ODB-I >> ODB-II harness though O.o -- And you'd need a new ECU (ODB-II).

yes u do dumbass...
If its an obd2 car, then they will plug u up. Therefore if ur not runnin obd2 u will fail..
TO THE OP: This is what i did. I have a obd1 b16 in my 2000 civic(obd2). I used my stock harness(obd2 vtec), added a few sensors that are obd2 specific, such as the sensor on the oil pump that counts its rpms. then got the p2t ecu(obd2 b16 ecu from the 99-00 si)...
N that is a homemade obd2 set up

When I went there there were seperate lanes for the 96+ compared to the older cars. Since my motor is a 92 i went in the older lane. They gave me the obd check and i failed, then they told me to go to the 96+ lanes. I went through there and they gave me an obd check there also. I failed that too. As far as swapping motors and stuff.....yeah not an option. Im only 18 and dont really have money layin around for spare motors. I never heard of that whole illegal thing but someone told me I can take the car to get a state inspection, and that I would have a better chance to pass there.

Pretty sure its the stock ecu it is a straight p30 thats obd1.

I had no idea it was such a hassel to put an obd1 ecu into an obd2 car. I was wondering if I throw a 99-00 si ecu in will I be throwing a CEL and if so would they be hard to get rid of?
Rule of thumb techincally in swapping cars for emmission purpose's...
you never put a motor in the car thats older then the car....
i know in Cali you can't..and apparently Texas you can't too
Let me tell you right now that its going to be "impossible" to emmision that motor in the car...the obd1 motor doesn't have a Crankfluc sensor on the crankshaft....and the ECU...p2t=99-00 is definately going to look for that...There are 2 o2 sensors in obd2 and you aren't using that ethier...so even if you did plug in a 99-00 Si ecu...its going to throw a CEL...which would cause you to fail
Get a Temp plate and find a friend with a sohc...swap it out in a day....or 2....or 3...i dono....and get it done....

If your car is 96 and up its OBDII a nationwide standard. You've got a DLC (Data Link Connector) under your dash that the inspector HAS to plug in to for your car to pass. Checks history for erased codes, pending codes, does a system check i belive, and **** like that. If your car is 96 and up, it HAS to be OBDII to pass inspection, because if you've got an OBDI motor in it, plugging into the DLC wont give you any feedback, hence, no pass. I dont know if some states have any way around it but basically convert the motor to OBDII (if thats possible im not sure) or you wont pass. Good Luck

Man this really sucks. Basically swapping out motors is not an option. Either I weasel my way out of it or a lesson learned. I mean come on. There are plenty of obd1 cars in the chicago land area.....how do they pass?

illegally!
here in cali i know that there are people that smog cars illegally by swapping car while doing the tests for example entering the vin number of your car into the computer and testing another car that is legal.

All you can really do is convert to OBD2B if you want to pass emissions.
I don't understand why people convert to OBD1 when they have to pass emissions.
