1993 Honda Accord EX Bone Stock Automatic
220k Miles
I was driving around all day this fateful day searching for a new car for my mother and brother....Ironically, my car takes a **** on me too that day. This is what happend.
Driving back home, coming threw a construction area, at about 45-50 mphs with a steady foot on the gas, i felt a band/belt break or something and my RPM's shot up to nearly 5k 6k RPMS.
The Car didn't accelerate faster even with the RPM's this high. I lost speed so i quickly down shifted it into 3rd (D3). Still nothing happend. I downed it to second (D2) still nothing. At this point, i've dropped to about 20 MPH in the middle of a 2 lane contruction zone downtown on a highway. I shifted it finally down to first gear (D1) and it moves at 15 MPH at 2k RPM's ONLY. If i accelerated more, RPM's will just float and the car wouldnt accelerate. Kept it at 2k and it'll climb or stay at 15 MPH.
So i baby it all the way to the closest exit, which was about 2 miles away and all the way im talking to my GF's father (20+ year Mechanic) and tellem i think my transmission just took a ****. He told me to get off and turn off the car incase i DO blow up the transmission. So i do.
Well, i wait about 5 mins to restart the car and nothing. Cranks but doesn't crank over. Like there's NO compression.
So after we get it towed to the shop, i take out the starter and examine the Engine assuming it was the timing belt or something that went. Timing belt is fine. Cam Shaft spins. Torque Converter spins free too but we cannot see to the Flex Plate. We're guessing it's the Flex Plate that snapped at the Crank or could be a faulty Starter...
But a bad starter wouldnt cause the whole engine to stall like that would it? Or maybe if it somehow jammed in the Torque Converter itself?
Also, is it possible too that the Engine Crank walked? The whole time i did not trigger a CEL or nor do i have one on at the moment. But if it did walk, wouldnt the car have died completly?
Very strange and too many possiblities. Help before i start tearing this thing apart?

i have seen many cases where the flex plate has broken usually due to the engine or trans being replaced without use of the alignment dowels

I know the Engine was replaced about 2 years ago, but if that was the case, wouldnt it have broken awhile back insted of now?
Interesting though...so when Honda Auto Transmissions have problems like this, the Flex Plate is usually the culprit?
