i would do it, but most people on this site are going to tell you to just do a swap. But i believe in the single overhead cam

the sohc is a good motor but for what your gonna spend on a turbo kit you could easialy drop a b18c in there and make comparable power.
the swap is easier and more reliable.

turboin the old D16 is a bigger bang for your buck then a swap, but a swap has more potential. but then again... you could turbo the SOHC for now... and when you get a swap... just change the manifold and tap the oil pan on the new one and whammo turbo swap

well it depends , you can achieve up to 175whp .seen the dyno on a turbo SOHC a while ago . but remember that will be the max hp out of the motor (in to reliable issues come in place) but the gains with the swap is that, the swap is just the beginning .b18c1 stock put out around 150-153whp ( i said around cause there are exepections) and from there you could decide N/A or Turbo . depending on your budget . but you can have lots of fun with just the swap and take it from there , seeing what you budget allows you

i went the sohc turbo route
and im happy with my choice
my plans are to boost up to 12 psi with a vtec head
hopefully i can make around 215 whp or so
and thats some good power for a sohc
especially if your on a budget like me

215whp on a D16 with a stock bottom-end? It's a matter of time before something breaks. D16 rods=dinky.

Not sure how easy it is to turbo a D17A2. I don't think anyone's made a kit yet for the 7th gen Civics.

Besides, a B-series motor wouldn't even fit under the hood of a Civic. You wanna swap? Try the motor/tranny from the RSX Type-S (F20B??? or is that for the S2000...hmmm...)

My rebuilt SOHC D16Y8 is currently underway. With the forged internals, I'm expecting 225whp daily.

I'm boosting my d16z6. I've always had a single cam and loved it. Had 4 so far. 3 in my eg cx h/b and 1 in my crx si. I know my motor so well and it so easy to get a lot more power out of it.

i cant get over your numbers your boosted SOHC makes especially your tq numbers. and it aint even a y8. i am gonna have to get up wit you on your set-up in the near future. i drive an ex coupe and i am saving up for a turbo also. i was saving for a swap but i said **** it and just get a turbo. if i blow the motor i can get a long block for cheap.

when you posted those pics of your ride when you painted your gsr's, that is when i got inspired to go the turbo route..........

I really like your car Roaring Turtle! It's cool to see someone turbo the d16y7...I was going to buy a 92-95 Si and turbo that..but instead i'm buying a cheaper car and swapping...to each his own...I'd be happy with either route though! I like the idea of turboing SOHCs because it's more original.

I just turbocharged my D16Y8. I run 9psi daily on the stock bottom end with a Hondata Stage 2B and RC440cc injectors. It pulls harder than my friends new WRX.

I am really glad to see so many positive comments about the SOHC on this post here.
Just because there are swaps available for the civics doesn't mean that you must go that route or if you even want to go that route.
I feel that any motor w/ stock stock internals under too much boost with blow.
Upgrade accordingly and have fun boostin.
Don't knock the SOHC cuz is missing a cam.

Also, not everybody want to drive a full drag car on a daily basis. If the GReddy turbo kit for the SOHC satisfied the driver then let him have the turbo kit.

KEEP BOOSTIN

sohc is all good but a dohc is definitely better, and if you turbo a b18 or b16 then you got a hell fast car there

I drive a 2001 Civic... I know there aren't any turbo kits out there for my car right now, so should I just try to build my bottom end so when I get my turbo kit, I can boost the PSI to like 12lbs? Or just wait for the turbo and do the bottom end later?

true but then you're that much more in debt. you need to decide what your plans are. if you want a crazy hp monster, you may want to get a swap and then save for FI. if you're just looking for a little bit of fun on a lower budget, definitely turbo the sohc.

bal & blue print is basically making everything in your bottom end EXACTLY to spec...all gaps, torque specs, wear marks....everything is balanced, and installed to precise spec...

is it necissary....No

is it a good thing...definately.
