ac works but heater doesnt
The 2 hoses that go thru the firewall. One should have a valve in it. Check to make sure that cable is connected properly so it works the valve.
Turn the temperature control & see whether it moves the valve. I'm not sure about '97, but my '98 only works the valve when the ignition switch is turned ON. Could be a broken or disconnected cable under the dash?

Make sure not to overlook the obvious. Make sure that the temp. control **** is not broken. The 94-97 acc heater ***** are weak and the base tends to split. It will feel like you're turning it but it's not operating the cable. I can't count how many times I've had a car brought in for A/C or heat inop and that's all that was wrong. Check it first. Pull on the **** until it comes out and inspect the base to see if it's split.
"That ****" is the temperature control **** that you don't have because Honda had a slider lever that year... The round **** started in 1998.

Your heater cable (#14) might be broken or disconnected. Somewhere. I think that cable goes to the air damper doors under the dash, then ANOTHER cable goes from there out to the heater valve.

Sorry but incorrect. My '97 accord climate controls. '94-'97 have these controls.

Firmly grasp the **** like this and pull straight out.

It is very common for the base of this **** to split and no longer turn the metal bar visible in picture 2. Below pic is base of ****. If this is cracked turn on your car then pull the fan **** off the same way and try it on the temp control. If it works go buy a **** and be happy you got off cheap. If that's not it go buy a manual and some tools.

Sorry for the crap *** pics. It's one in the morning and I can't sleep so I went out and took pictures of my dash in the dark.

what do you mean regular air comes in ?? are you getting cold air when a/c is on ?? and getting no heat??
if so it could be a stuch open thermostat not allowing coolant to heat up properly
or like other have suggested could be a broken **** thus the lever is stuck on cold, or a bad heater valve, not opening up ,, also chk the coolant level.
I doubt very much that you got issues with the heater core ,,

if the thermostat was stuck open he would see the temp. gauge fluctuating quite a bit... ie. temp would rise as a dead stop and fall when moving. also the car would never really heat up to normal operating temp. unless sitting still at idle for a very long period of time.
when the heat is on you also would feel the same affect in the air temp. as the engine temp. gauge would be reflecting... warm air at a dead stop and cooler air when moving.
since he did not mention either of these I naturally asume he is not having these symptoms, esp. since they would be quite noticeable.
you never know though, maybe I just have heater cores on the brain... as I just replace one in a buddies 97 accord last week. it was nasty, all clogged up from a bad mix of coolant (too much water cause he is lazy when he refilled it).

If you've eliminated the **** then you need to move down the line. Is the water valve moving when the **** is turned. If not is it because the cable is unhooked or broken or the control is broken or is the water valve itself stuck. I have seen several 5th gens where the cable came loose at the back of the control panel. I'd really reccomend buying a good service manual if you are planning on keeping the car and doing some of your own work.

It can still be a cable that's broken or disconnected.
Go to hondaautomotiveparts.com & put in your car's info. Look at heater controls, then at heater duct, then heater hoses. (Hope I've got those names right) You have to follow the control cables. Some cars have only one cable, some have 2...

Here's the heater control picture for a '97 EX (the one I posted before was an LX).

Figure out how to open up your dashboard so you can see the cable. Find out if it's OK.
Here's the heater unit picture. Look underneath the dashboard from the passenger footwell. I'm not sure where that first cable connects, but it operates some of those damper doors. Then #10 below is the 2nd cable that goes out thru the firewall. Check that it's OK & that it moves with the temperature-control dial.

Here's the water valve & the heater hoses. Check that the cable is connected to the valve (#1) and it works the lever.

ps... Just to be sure, yours is an Accord EX??

Sorry,I did not read all the posts, when I do a rediator flush, my way, and the heater doesnt get warm I run it up to 3K rpm with the water hose in the radiator filler neck, almost always in less than a minute the heat starts as the air was forced out of the heater core, someone mentione3d a stuck open thermostat, it will still get warm in the summer but not good in the winter. I am sure someone mentioned backflushing the heater core or checking heater valve if the car has one, good luck.

Yes. That is for '94-'97 EX and LX. Mines an LX. The one you originally posted is a '97 civic heater control.
