Default Turbo GSR build...waddya think about this

im doing a mild turbo build on my 163k mile b18c1, shooting for 400whp with my gt35r. im building the block only, with JE 9:1 pistons, Eagle H Beam Rods and ARP rod bolts and head studs.

my main concern is the sleeves, and i do not want to put out the money to have my block Benson sleeved like i would in a perfect world. ive heard negative things about block guards, and i also know that another option is block posting. what do you guys suggest i do. of course, i want it to be reliable, as this is a daily driven car.

also, what head gasket should i use, and what kinda bearings ACL or OEM hondas?

400whp is on the threshold but many many people have done it before. Just make sure you check the block out and make sure everything is a-ok. But again many people have done that or more on stock sleeves.

A stock gasket is the way to go although we have had good success with Cometic gaskets also.

Most people would go with OEM bearings but we use ACL Standards in most of our builds and they do just fine. ACL Standards are oversized so most machine shops can machine it to the exact specs.

Sleeve it unless you want to end up like my old block. this wasn't a DD and it had DFI management on there with Race gas.

let that be an example the stock sleeves can only take soo much pressure and stress until they distort or crack.

well you also have think that tunning and the tunning softwear has come a long way since 2000. I have seen alot of 500+whp cars on stock sleeves and they have lasted for a long time.

But it comes down to your tune and your build. If its built good and tunned good then you wont have a problem.

there are people making 600whp on stock sleeves, its all in the tune... 400whp on stock sleeves will be fine as long as the tune is spot on, and you dont overboost/mishshift you have nothing to worry about

It comes down to your piston-to-wall clearance and tune.

If you run what the piston manufacturer says, then you'll be fine (with a good tune).

Dont forget to mention that this is 600whp on RACE gas! Pump gas is a totally different story......

OP: Are you going to run race gas or just pump gas? Unfortunately I live in cali and all we have @ the pump is shitty 91. I will be using a mix of 91 and 100 LL avgas.

Drive around on a low boost setting as a DD and get a good tune.

Im a believer in stock sleeves. Others are right, if the tune is good and done by a trustworthy tuner they will hold some power. Mine have been holding 300whp+ for a little while now, and Im not sure what my piston/wall clearance is, but I beat on my engine when I drive it and it holds just fine on 93 octane. Its not a daily car but could be.

My motor has about 5k on it now with a mild build like you are wanting to do. If it last till 10k or so Im going to rebuild it again and more than likely go up to a 81.5mm bore on the same stock sleeves. Maybe shoot for 400whp+ on that setup when the time comes.
