Power steering and AC removal....worth it? ( did a search)
I was thinking about getting rid of these items. Would the people who have done these say that it was worth it? How is the low speed steering effort without PS? Is the steering still very direct as it is stock? I live in GA so I am having more second thoughs on the AC than the PS, but I hate using AC cause it makes my car feel so sluggish. Anyone from the southern states not have AC?
How much weight would I save by taking these items out?

I plan to remove the p/s in mine within the next couple of months. I just removed the a/c system recently and could not believe how much weight was spared.
If the R is your daily driver, I wouldn't remove these components simply because of everyday driveability. However, if it's a track car as mine is, go for it!
The greatest benefit to the removal of these systems is by far weight, not power. It may be more practical for you to simply remove the p/s belt and leave the a/c in.

I removed my AC and loved it. i just had a blast taking all that **** out of my car and my engine bay looks a lot cleaner now. I want to remove P/S too, but it seems a little more difficult.
I just recently removed my A/C and have the P/S belt diconnected. You get used to the hard effort of slow speed turning. It never really bothered me. I just weighed my entire A/C system (on bathroom scale) minus the evaporator (under dash) and it came out to be 30 lbs even.
My plan with the p/s is to remove the entire system and install a cx manual rack. I don't know the weight savings on this, but it's not very much.

For the record: I unhooked my PS, absolutely love it. a little tough at first, but i'm used to it now, its a daily driver, and i love it. made the car feel much much more sporty. Prolly pull out the unused pump and whatnot when i get home in a few weeks
Turn you AC off and you will not lose any power. It weighs 40lbs or so in a Type-R, which is not a lot more than the spare tire.
You can disable the power steering by disconnecting the belt. You could rip all the lines out (makeing sure to leave a return line for the rack to keep it lubricated) but the entire weight here is only about 20lbs.
At low speed steering effort is quite considerable and may shock you. Take the belt off and see how you like. I have done it and love it - steering feel is dramatically improved.
Unless you are a hard core track head, removing the AC is more an exercise in machismo than sense.

I just took off my PS belt and it feels WAY better, parking is a bitch but whatever.....I've been thinking off ditching the A/C but it's FL and it gets hot here, and don't think my girlfriend would appreciate it

I agree with the whole girlfriend thing...I was wonder how much of a bitch it would be to go on dates during the summer with no AC. I guess right now I am leaning toward, no PS but keeping the AC, even though I hate using AC as I stated before. I think I will try driving the car with PS unhooked for a week to see what it is like before comitting.
I am trying to run 13 sec quarter miles for as cheap as possible hence the eagerness to take things out. The backseat is going first.

i have both a/c and p/s systems removed. the thing is when you remove p/s. you have get a manual rack and pinion set. for those of you who remove only the belt, and find very hard to turn for parking should consider installing a manual rack and pinion assembly. a manual crx one fits perfectly as well as an older integra manual one. the a/c removal takes out the most weight overall the hardest part is removing the dash to remove the evaporater thing next to the heater core. all in all it is well worth it to take out weight from the front end.

Do the older integra and CRX steering racks still give you a responsive feel? I mean the ITR steering isnt that great for feedback but it is pretty responsive and I would like to keep it that way. Also, how much will one of these steering racks be? Could I install it myself with some help?
I keep wavering back and forth on whether or not to get rid of my AC.

ehhh **** the girls.......From what i have seen though. if you remove the whole PS system. And then loop the rack to keep it lubricated it is a lil easier to turn.
i dont know where you all live but where i live i neeed to parallel park veryday and with no ps it is awful. the steering does feel a little better but if it is your daily driver i dont think it is worth it.
In suburbia, GA, I hardly ever need to parallel park. I'm still interested in the whole changing the steering rack out with a manual steering rack. What do you guys mean by keeping the rack lubricated though?
Stock for stock a '97 ITR with no a/c and no rear wiper motor/arm/wiper fluid res. Is more along the lines of a "true" R than the later '98 and up cars, even though the a/c was still an option in '98 and standard on '00-'01. I would love to have a '97 ITR with low miles in perfect shape. Those cars are the shiznit fo shizzle.
Plus you would finally get to remove that stupid p/s fluid cooling hose loop that runs in front of the radiator.
