i dont have an LS.. but i usually put in like 4.25... put in 4 and then use your dipstick to see if you need to add more... and add it gradually until your at the full line...

Weird, I always put in 4 even after letting it drain for about 15 minutes (the oil is hot, too), and that always brings it right up to the full mark on the dipstick.

Should you all really be working on your own cars if you don't know how much oil to put in? J/K

Helms says(*in my best "Survey Says" voice*):
4.0 quarts for B18B oil change with filter
4.2 quarts for B18C oil change with filter

I would recommend going with what the helms manual says. Read what that other guy posted.

What year? My 98 takes four quarts exactly...the GS-R and Type R take more, so they don't apply to us non-VTECers.

Then how come 4 quarts puts me exactly at the full mark in my GS-R, even days after changing the oil it's still exactly on the full mark (w/ filter change).

Because .1inches on the dipstick makes a large difference on how much to put in. If there is ANY change in 1 dipstick to another then you will see a difference.

GSR is around 4.25 quarts.

If you dont remove the oil filter you might not have to fill as much.

I put 4.5 on my 94gsr. I know I'll be burning it up sooner or later.

sorry to bring back this old thread, but i have a jdm b18b in a 95cx, did my first oil change motor only has 43,000 on it and i added 4 quarts of oil which put me over the top dot. ive been driving her kinda hard to burn some oil to get it just right. i was wondering if im ok as far as rings, seals, compression test, etc.... i read people need to check those things but they added 6-7 qrts, or was way over the line.
car drives fine no noises, anything, just was a tad bit sluggish when i first drove her but the second time everything felt normal.
thanks appreciate the input.

As long as the overfill is minimal, you will be fine. In the future though:

You have to check the oil level on level ground and after you've run the engine until the oil pressure light goes out after just doing an oil change.

The oil filter and oil passages will take about .5 quart. To compensate for this, I add oil up to 1/2 an inch over the top dot before starting the car to save myself a little time. I can usually get it on the first try.
