Music and riding?
I have been riding bikes for some time now ( 3 or so years ) and have felt very wearry about listening to music and riding. IE: an ipod and ear buds. How many of ya'll do this and how does most everyone feel about it? Maybe I could just wear one instead of them both, and I do understand it doesnt have to be blasting loud but whats loud enough to hear and enjoy music, but not get snuck up on by an ambulance or something like that? Just wondering what people think about it!
I listen to music through my chatterbox on commutes but its definately off in the twisties. The good thing about listening with the small speakers vs ear buds is that you can still hear some ambient noises like car horns and what not. Some people will say never, others all the time, even during twisties. Its really up to you to know your level of attention and how much of it you can afford to give up.

i think if i were on a long ride i would consider music or something like that but most of the time when i am riding i want total focus on the road and my surroundings.
plus what better music is there than 14k RPM? unless its 10k on a Vtwin.

Just about every link you post if from that site...must be some good stuff on there
I don't like listening to music and riding...it takes my focus off the street and my surroundings...riding a bike is dangerous enough and that's just adding another factor/risk.

I refuse to listen to music on my bike, my riding style, mixed with not being able to hear whats around me is just stupid, many would consider my riding style stupid, but thats not the point.
I never listen to anything but the sound of my bike and the wind beneath my sails... I would go as far to say this may have saved my life a couple of times over the years. hearing a siren, another car out of control (on the freeway when it was coming to a stop), and the every so often loose or misaligned bits on my machine
my long trips on the highway I use ear buds + ipod. it's the only way to keep from going insane. I like that how to for the helmet... only thing is I don't listen to music all the time so lots of the time it'd be worthless and in the way...
Long trips (2 hours +) on freeway, ipod is a must for me. I feel it keeps me more alert than without it. Just have to be smart about it, just like everything else when you ride.
Plus, riding across the Golden Gate, on a clear spring day while listening to jimi hendrix's red house is a spiritual experience.

Im the EXACT opposite, the music I listen to, I would be wheeliing through traffic t 100+ mph doing ghostrider ****. I sappose if you listen to something like micheal buble or something then crank it up, LOL, my music is way to heavy to "slow me down" but judging by your HT name (deftones) and your avatar, you don't listen to micheal buble...how does listening to heavy music slow you down?

doesn't slow me down, but the highway for 400 miles gets really old really fast... I'll just stick my ipod on shuffle for a playlist and switch it when I fill up at the next stop. And yeah I don't listen to quiet boring music. heh. It just gives me something to sing along to in my helmet and bob my head to. There's times I find myself speeding but I'm typically good with my self control with regards to my speeds on the highways. Specially cause I go through some of the most heavily patrolled areas. and well VA cops are ******** and MD has a bazillion unmarked cars. I saw an unmarked black mustang gt with no extra antennas on it last time. Only reason I knew is he had someone pulled...
Basically I go fast enough so I'm passing some cars and changing lanes (typical cruise speed for me is indicated 85 which is prob an actual 80) to keep things from the norm and there's the occasional 100+mph run to the next group of cars but I try to keep that to the bare min.

ohh i see if your doing realllly longgg highway rides then I can understand listening to some music, those rides get boring when your not throwing your weight around. I don't speed much either unless im in the twisties, on long open straight aways I don't think i go over 75 mph much, what the hell is the point. I wait for corners and then speed up.
yeah if I'm riding the twisties or something I wear plugs or nothing. I've listened to music before and it can affect how I ride pending on the beat and how heavy it is... I rarely listen to it except for long trips

Come to think of it, im wearing plugs 100% of the time, so music wouldn't exactly work for me...duh....

I only use my ipod on long commutes. but for short rides, where its not just one straight constant street for miles i don't. going to work is 1 road 45mph for 20 minutes so i cant go to work without it.
can you guys get the regular ipod buds under your helmet? mine wouldnt stay in when i tried to put my helmet on. i bought some in-ears but have yet to have a chance to try them.
