Default Grinds when I shift...

Hello,
I have a 1990 CRX Si w/ B16A2 Swap and it is using a cable to hydro conversion for the transmission, sometimes when I shift from 2nd to 3rd it will grind. Usually this only happens above 5K Rpms, and I am driving it hard, doesn't seem to happen if I am accelerating/shifting slow. Now I know what your thinking probably just a syncro... but just hear me out.

My old CRX had a 1st Gen B16A w/ a Cable Transmission and when I went above 5K Rpms and shifted into third (from 2nd obviously), the car would grind, but it was also hard to get it into gear. With my new Rex similar problem except when it grinds is floats right into gear like a dream, just makes a grinding noise. It doesn't seem to bother anything, and it doesn't do it all the time, just once in awhile.

My guess is that the clutch is not disengaging as fast as I am throwing it into gear, and thus the grind sound. I think this must be because of the Cable to Hydro conversion, I haven't heard anything good about them (It was on the car when I bought it). Also I should mention it doesn't do this in any other gear.

Does anyone agree with me? Any tips on how to correct it or make it any better? Is it still just my syncros?

Grinding could be your throwout bearing like mentioned above. You can tell normally by sitting in neutral engage and dissengage the clutch and listen to see if it there is any noise difference. What you are listening for is the throwout bearing. If it is really noisy than it is probably bad.

Another possibility is your synchros or bad which is common in older honda trannys that have been driven hard (raced) alot. third gear is normally the 1st to go in my experiences.

I have owned 3 Hondas now, and they all make that noise you describe. One of which I had a brand new stage 1 clutch and flywheel installed on. However it is hardly noticeable on this CRX, I think it must be a normal noise, it's not like loud or anything, it's just neutral. I have read about that being a throwout bearing before though, so now I am unsure.

Is there any other symptoms of a bad throwout bearing?

bad TOB is usually like, cant get it into gear or hard to get it into gear.... once in gear its hard to get it out of gear.

i had a bad tob and my car would kinda move forward when you try to put it into gear.... it got so bad it was sooo hard to put it into gear when putting it in 3rd once i had to push so hard the shifter cracked the console ....

also, when you drive and you shift the gears grinded and reverse did nothing but grind those were my symtoms

I have never had any problems shifting except on my 1st rex going into 3rd, sometimes it was tricky to get in, but never required any extra force, just took longer to go into gear because it would grind first.
