timing belt/chain
I have a 97 accord, 2.2l 4door. was wondering if all the honda engines have belts or do some have chains from the factory? is there any way to tell if belt is going bad? who, where can i get a chain for this engine? any help would be appreciated. this vehicle has about 110,000 mi.

theres really no real way to tell if its going bad. and we have belts. the best thing to do is change it at the recomended intervals, which i believe is about 80k. so unless yours was changed at 80k i highly suggest you do it right away
how long have you owned it? If you have owned it since well before 90K miles change that belt asap otherwise when it brakes you will be doing a rebuild on your motor.
You are 20K past due on changing it.

- The S2000 has a chain, all others, belts.
- A timing belt offers little clue as to how close it is to failure, milage is the BEST indicator
- A dealer or http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ , I would not use anything other than OEM for something this crucial, and do the water pump while you are in there.
good luck

The k-series engines have chains. So do the civic r-series engines.

I posted a similar question a while ago and got this response

P_Adams posted in the thread so it must be right
But it looks like you are due both mileage wise and time wise and the only real way to check the belt it to take it off and then you should replace it anyways.

Hondadude responded as well so that is proof its a GREAT thread LOL
Yeah, right, look at his pic. Old gray haired guy, probably goes to bed and dreams about rebuilding carbs. LMAO He probably even knows where the power valve is located

I was wondering when getting a timeing belt if i have to get the 'Timing Belt Tensioner' or "Timing Belt Kit' or if i can just get the timing belt it self and water pump itself.

Does that make me officially old?

97 accords have more than the 'timing belt and water pump'. You also have the balance belt. shoudl replace everythign while its all open along with the timing belt tensioner, and the balance belt tensioner. And the valve cover gasket set, thermostat, rad cap.
so with everythiing thats about $175 in parts wholesale prices, not including coolant.
