I've been doing my own brake work on Fords, Mercedes, and Toyotas for years. When a friend brought his 2000 accord by because the rear brakes were making a lot of noise, I thought I could help him. The car has 120k and the rear pads were probably original. Can anyone tell me about the longevity of the rear calipers? On the Toyotas that I have worked on, the rear calipers almost always lock up after replacing the pads. I turned the pistons back in on these (quite an innovative system, it took me some time to figure out how to get the piston back in) and then with the old pads still in place worked the piston back out several times and it didn't seem to stick. Then I replaced the pads. I told him to keep a close eye on them for the next couple of weeks and not to be surprised if they locked up, is there anyone with any expert knowledge on this system? Any advise? Should we have replaced the calipers too?

caliper rebuilt kit will fix most of the problem, unless the piston is grinded away.

The rear caliper don't even come close to need a rebuilt at 120k, make sure the parking cable is adjusted and not touching the rotor

 

In 10 years of dealership experience, can count on one hand the number of calipers I have replaced. Just make sure that you don't try and push that rear caliper piston in when replacing the pads. The piston turns in clockwise like a screw. I use a screwdriver in the groove to turn the piston with. Also make sure that you line the grooves in the piston to go over the tit on the inside pad otherwise the inside pad will wear uneven.
