I have an '87 Accord DX.I was driving one day on the highway and I heard a whining noise and then 5th gear just went out.I have been driving in fourth on the highway now but I would like some fuel economy from 5th gear back. I talked to a guy at a local import junkyard and he said there is a little plate on the outside end of the tranny. This plate can be removed and 5th gear parts can be changed right there. My mechanic says you have to pull the tranny and rebuild it. Any help would be appreciated.
How much longer is winter going to last? Is your beater worth the tranny rebuild? If my beater's 5th gear blew up id say "fuggit, its a $900 car, not worth the cash...."

I'm not giving this car up.I've had it for 2 years and never had a problem with it. The freakin' A/C is still ICE cold! It runs perfect and I have maintained it well. It's still got alotta mileage left. I still use it in the summer for work and when my other car is in pieces , so I would like to get it fixed if it won't be too much.
Yea that 5th gear was something not too extremely uncommon (though not a huge problem either) on 3rd gen Accords. The 5th gear can be replaced fairly easily without removing the tranny, so it shouldn't be too difficult (I've never done it myself though, so I don't know any of the specifics). Just take the cover off the left side of the tranny and you can access it through there. When you fill it back up just be sure to use 10w-30 motor oil.
Brian...I wouldn't worry too much about it. 288,500 here without a single tranny problem - including 5th - so ya probably got a ways to go, lol. And of all the people on our board (3rd gen), only a few have had this happen, and 1 was because he used 90 weight gear oil
