Brake upgrade - 01' Accord LX
Hey guys, I'm in need of some brake pads and some work to my brakes. They were last serviced at around 30k miles by honda and now I'm at 60k. They were at 25% worn back then but I know I needed new pads at least soon, I wanted to upgrade since I plan on putting some serious power in it in the future. What do you guys think I should do? I was looking at some drilled and slotted rotors for under $200 a pair, maybe getting some hawk or AEM pads, new calipers, shoes and hardware for the drums , and if the calipers weren't painted I'd paint them black along with the drums. What would be a good investment in my brakes for under $500? Thanks
drilled and slotted rotor doesn't do a jacksh-t for 90% of the time, the drilled rotor have less surface area, which decrease the heat capacity, most of the rotor you see "drilled" are blank rotor and drilled by some machinist. Casted "drilled" rotor last long than those pos rotor, too bad only spoon and brembo make those and it's super expensive. Oh yeah, good luck finding a pad that actually release gas when being apply and did i mention they cracks?
Slot rotor? again, samething, they don't worth the extra money, you can't even feel any difference.
So what's the verdict on drilled and slotted rotor? don't get them.
I don't think you can get aem pads now, the whole aem line is handled by some other company now, but you don't want those pads anyway, they kind of weak.
So enough about the bad new, what should you do?
1)pad: Hawks HPS(very good stopping power, but it's very noisey and hard on rotor), colbert(track pad, which needs to be run at higher temperture), Axxis ultimate(one of the best street pads that can handle weekend track day)
I am personally an axxis fans, I am on my third sets on two of my three vehicle in the garage(the reason i don't run a set on my legend is that they don't make one for that car). Almost as quiet as oem(actually noise free for my accord, little more noise for my S2k), good brake fade resistance and good "bite", not nearly as hard on rotor as the HPS. The downside of the pad is that it's dusty like HELL.
if you have to drive the car everyday, get hps or ulimate.
2)Brembo Blanks rotor: cheaper than OEM rotor, lighter most of the time
3)disc rear brake upgrade, since you said about making alot of power in the future, i don't actually recommend this for street or daily driver. get a ex rear knucle and swap the rear, as you already know, there's nothing for the drums in the back.
it's perfectly fine for the street but if you pound on it long enough it will be too hot to do anything on the track.(unless you drag race). Notice you will still not have ABS with the disc.
4)dot 4 brake juice: higher boiling point, cheap and effective
