Default Roll cage front hoop question, del sol.

Ok, so my builder finishes up my cage, only to find out my head is too big and I'm too tall. I'm wondering what my options are, since the roof line is so low on the del sol. I'm 5"11' with a huge helmet. Ok, so here is where we're at now, the left side of my head will hit the bar that comes off the main hoop.

I somehow need that bar to go out further and still be legal, what can I do? I found this on an S2K, is this legal according to NASA CCR?

How it goes out at an angle off the main hoop, then straightens out. We're almost at the point of just using the rear main hoop and only having a roll bar, which means I wont be able to comete in this car Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be done?

Thanks.

Maybe have some "super low" seat mounts fabbed up?

even when i sit literally on the floor of the car, it still hits my helmet. The seat that I'm using, Sparco Evo is set at its lowest setting.

How many bends do you have in the A pillar hoop already? What size tubing are you using?
What is the car being built to run?

Answer those questions, and I can help you more!

If you still have sliders on your setbase, lose them. Get the seat attached to the floor securely, and you'll have plenty of head room. I just bolted the sidemounts of my Pro2000 directly to the floor, and at 5' 10-1/2" tall, with the same "big fat head/helmet", and a tall back (torso) to boot, I still look like a shrimp sitting in my EF. And it drops the CG of the car a good amount in the process.

Doesn't the main hoop need a proper diagonal to be legal? It doesn't have that, which would make it illegal anyway, so you won't be able to compete. I'd say that the cage needs to be redesigned according to the rulebook, then make yourself fit inside it, then build it.

Umm, the main hoop diagonal is there . . .

I thought it was supposed to go from the top corner to the floor, the diagonal in the picture only goes halfway down....maybe I'm wrong.

a little snooping in the image directory shows that it goes all the way down, or so it would appear anyway.

Answer: gangsta lean. I was "really" worried about the same thing. Just deal with it. Toss some roll bar padding on the bar, take the padding out of the bottom of the seat, and drive. I don't notice my bar unless I turn my head way over to the left, never really on the track. Makes a nice headrest for those high-G right turns.

Chris, 6'4", seat about 1" from the floor.

p.s. I'm not sure it's a "great" idea to bolt the seat to the floor? Anyone want to comment on that? I would think some support would be nice, whether it was welded inside or along the bottom/underneath the car.

Del soll cages can be very tricky. I have built 2 del sol cages so far and have developed a design that affords ample room for your head. Sorry, I don't have any pics, but one of my del sol customers may be kind enough to post some pics of their car to give you an idea. Or you can give me a call and we can talk about it. 831 801 6803. I'm in the sacramento area. It looks to me that cage is a loss, very nice craftsmanship though, just out the bars in the wrong spot.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

Mike, do you think there is any saving grace for the car? Is it possible to just redo the front hoops, keeping the main hoop? Or does the main hoop need to be redone also?

I thought about just driving it with the way it is, gangsta lean and all. Maybe I'll give that a shot. Here is a MS paint idea of what I was thinking of doing, which would have 3 bends in the front hoop bars, would this work?

Post pics of your seat mounting because I'm only 5'7 and I could never get the seat low enough with those brackets which you are using(sparco side mounts I'm guessing). I ended up making my own brakets for my civic.
Also if you pull the cushion of of the seat it drops you down even furthur but I'm guessing you tried all these things alrady...just checkin

Yes, I did. Even with me sitting on the metal floor of the car, the way it is now was still too close to my head. The sparco mount does se the seat "almost" as low as it can go, I guess I could get like another 1/2" by fabbing our own mounts. :\

I can take pics maybe tomorrow of the seat mounting, the car is 30 miles away from me right now.

Mount the seat low. It's good for saftey and performance, win win.
From my integra type r, Saftey Devices FIA cage kit. I made the seat brackets and it was very easy to do, 1" square stock from Lowes, and 1/4" alum. side plates. The co-drivers Sparco EVO is so close to the floor pan, you can't even get a finger in.

Yes, I cannot fit a finger under the seat right now.

I see you also have a bend in the front hoop at the top, room for the helmet i'm guessing? I want to try the same thing. Hopefully we'll be able to work something out.

Ok, now I see it, yea that bend was in there from the factory, again, cage kit. Worst comes to worst, you have to rebend the for-hoops and cut the old ones out.

My bad, it looked differently in the first picture.

If my Del Slow ever runs again, Mike will be building the cage..

Bring your car to him, he is the only one I know with multiple Del Slow cage experieces. Plus he is a good guy!

I mounted my EVO XL seat mounts straight to the floor in my CRX and found that the floorpan needed to be reinforced at the mounting points.

Ok, went back up to my fabricator and discussed my idea (awesome paint diagram above) and it looks like it will work. We will also be adding diagonals from the side of the main hoop up to the bend near the head of the front hoop. I'll be happy when I see it done.
