Need advice: Friend got a ticket for having a JDM F22B motor (illegal)
Hello, this is my first time posting in this forum, hello.
My friend in California has a Prelude with a F22B engine. He's currently in Iraq protecting our freedom, while his wife was the one who got pulled over.
what can he do to legally register the engine?
Thanks in advance,
eric

You need to get it Bared, I'm not sure if the F22b came in any US cars but what you would need is all the equipment for emmisions that came on a F22B car in the prelude that it is swapped into. Then you would have to take it to the Refree to have it pass the BAR. Its a bitch.
basically you have a 99% chance of failing the ref simply because all f22b* engines in the u.s. are sohc, and the f22b in the car is dohc, if by chance you luck out and the guy will test the f22b like an h23a1 (which is basically is except for the frm sleeves and bore) then you will just need to have connected all of the vacuum lines you would find on an h23a1 (egr, evap, map, etc...) and the sensors connected, the ref is exactly the same as a smog check, only differences are that they do not bend the rules for a non-carb header or intake like a normal smog place most likely would ignore, and they check to make sure each sensor and vacuum line are in the right place (which a smog check at a normal place should do anyways)
the ref really isnt the pain in the *** people make it out to be, it avoids so much trouble to just bar your usdm/jdm swap right after you do it, for f/h series swaps, the vacuum lines and sensors and smog parts are already there and connected for the most part, you just have to reconnect them to the new motor

Is it possible to dismiss the ticket if they drove the car to houston, texas and got it registered?
What would be the best thing to do to solve this situation?

well you can set it as a convertion sence the f22b and the h23 i some what the same you just have to request a bar-lable with the ref. he will check if all the emmisions components work normal then he will put a bar-lable on the door post wich makes everything legal.

My first question is how the hell did they know the F22B engine was not stock? It looks exactly like an H23, and I doubt many people put that engine in the car, do they?

You'd be shocked at the number of people that do that swap. It's WAY easier and cheaper to dump an F22 in than find a used H23. And you only lose something like 6 ft. lb's tq or something dumb like that.

This is your best bet...if the engine year is the same or newer than the car, if all the emmission equipment is in place...take it to the referee...and see what they say, it only cost 30something buck...if he doesn't pass you take it to another place...referee does goes by the book..however some referee are ********, other might not car as long as the motor is the same year or newer and it's smog equiped. is it written somewhere that to say F20B is illegal? simply it's not in the US, but if you can get to work legally I dont see what's the problem.

Cali is pretty **** about engine codes, they'll check.
But if they could actually change the stamp to read H23A# they'd probably be in business...they are very similar engines.

I live in California. Tell your friend that all they have to do is pay the fine. They will give you a fine in the mail for not showing up to the Ref. Pay it and its done. I have had many friends pulled over and sent to the ref. None of them went and they all just payed the 260 dollar fine. Trust me it will work. Just hope she doesnt get pulled over anymore. Or else shell have to pay it again. I suggest taking off any muffler, illegal neons or headlights and make sure the front license plate is on. This way cops have no reason to pull her over. Hope that helps

This is excellent advice.
There are other ways, but this is by far the most cost effective.

no, because you have to be a resident of that state to register your car there.
