Default h22 and h23 crank pulley sizes

do any of you know the diameter of the crank pulley on the h22 and the h23? how close are they? does it make much of a difference if the crank pulley is slightly larger or smaller?

the h23 crank pulley is bigger in diameter, and the h23 pulley uses a different belt size. And i don't think the h23 pulley is balanced like the h22 one.

will the size difference cause any performance difference?

Neither are balanced, thats why they have balance shafts.

it would make sense to go with the smaller one

In all honestly, what assec. are you using? if your using all your "h23" ones, then put the H23 pulley on, if your using your H22a ones, then put thta pulley on. This way you won't blow alternators every 2 months, or F up your p/s pump cause its not pumping close to hard enough, or worse? too hard.

well i ask this because my lude is in the shop getting a h22 put in. i used to have aem pulleys on the h23. the crank pulley on the h22 was a little banged up so he called me up and asked if i wanted him to just switch over my si pulleys since obviously you cant just switch over the crank pulley due to the fact the vtec belts have one more rib than the si ones. either way im just making sure im not going to in any way lose any hp with the h23 pulleys on the h22

to underdrive your accessories. not a new concept.

If you step down to the smaller pulley it will underdrive your accessories, yielding greater HP. It's common to use B16 crank pulleys on B18's for a cheap "factory" upgrade. It will not decrease your accessories lifetimes at all, but it will underpower your alternator and P/S pump. Like the previous posts stated, H22s do not require any type of external harmonic balancing. They do utilize internal balance shafts to replace the role of the "harmonic dampener" on Nissans, Fords and Chevys for example. The crank pulley does incorporate a rubber-type material inserted into the pulley. All that does is cancel out vibration from the accessories.

my friend just put together a new built h23 block i tried turning one of the balancer shafts..and man i thought it would be easier to turn....seems like a lot of parasitic loss there. Is there that much friction on the balancer shafts?

There shouldn't be too much friction, but then again if it is a freshly built motor (not run yet) there might be a considerable amount. The front balance shaft should be able to swing its self over, once you turn it a certain degree counterclockwise.

I thought I had read here before that it is a bad idea to replace the crank pulley on the H22A..... The reason to my recollection was a harmonic problem... Comments??

I have the Unorthodox Ultra S crank pulley, very light! No problems so far.
