Bench testing the vss
Signs seem to point to a bad vss on our 91 accord so the unit was pulled and is setting on the work bench. Our multi-meter shows no resistance when probing between the black ground wire and the yellow 12v wire. Was wondering if this is a normal reading?? Also, are there any other "bench tests" that can be done before shelling out the $$ for a new vss?
I might have some insight for you. I work in the rail industry and we bench test our speed sensors frequently. from what I know there should be some resistance between the supply and the ground (8.8Kohms +/- 100ohms) so probably the sensor is bad.
set it to read Voltage, not resistance...
spin the sensor... see the fluctuations at least that's how my vss on my nissan works
PS: i've recently found a more honda-accord-specific car forum
click on me!
but you should read a fluctuation of V when you're spinning it by hand...

being disconnected from the car, youll get no voltage anywhere since its not getting any power, so you cant test for voltage...
if you set the meter to resistance/ohms and connect to pins B(yellow) and C(orange), twisting the gear by hand should result in a resistance alternating between some certain amount and Overload (infinite resistance, meaning its an open connection)

Thanks for the info. The rotating bobbin on the inside of the vss looks perfect, so I'm guessing that's not the problem. If the unit is bad it seems the problem would have to lie in the internal electrical circuit. In the morning I'll have to do some more fooling around with the multi-meter.
