Default Koni Yellows vs. KYB AGX vs. Tokico

HEY guys... i'm new here...

just want to get your opinions on the shocks above... I'm in dire need of new shocks to go with my H&R Sports on my SiR.. looking for externally adjustable shocks, and i hear the best are koni yellows. Some of my friends (Who are mustang drivers) say they are the best, and adjustable shocks such as KYBs cannot compare... but they are MUSTANG drivers.. haha

Some other ppl have told me KYBs are good, made in japan, meant for japanese cars... so thus the domestic guys will think they're crap.. haha i dunno? So if you have any opinions or personal experience running a similar set-up.. plz let me know! Appreciate any help guys... thanks!

*Oh yah, i'm also thinking about getting a different set of springs... dont really like the LOOK for the H&R Sports, they dont drop enuf in the back, but functionally, they work pretty good... stiff ride, very little roll... but anyways, which of the shocks above (or others) would run good with diff. springs out there?

Koni KYB and Tokico are all very good struts as long as their used as intended. and thats "stock replacment" none of the struts will do **** for you if you lower your car too much or plan on doing any circuit racing. All adjustable struts made by the manufactures you listed are better than the non. I would personally suggest that you get the adjustable versions. But and i cannot stress this enough.

you get what you pay for.

If you want to car to handle like the F1 cars get the good 2000 dollars coilovers and spend another $300 getting them adjusted. if you just want a good ride and a little better handleing. just get some good 1-1.5 inch lowering springs with a good spring weight.

IMO

Yah, I've got the KYBs, not doing much for me at all. My car is used basically for a daily driver and is lowered on ground controls. I'm looking for better ride quality, so all in all, spend your money right the first time... koni.

I have Koni's on my Celica and Tokico's on my hatch and I regret not getting Koni's for the hatch. Night and day between the 2 and I had KYB's on the hatch before I went with Tokico's boy are they **** I hated them the most

I've tried Jokico HP's(suck) and got KYB AGX. The AGX work great, pretty stiff, good for drag, keeps from bottoming out. Softest setting felt like Jokico's. Dunno how good for autox. Haven't tried Koni's yet. KYB AGX is GAB suspension, same company.

Default Unfair comparison

If someone asked you to compare a Ferrari to a CTR, and asked "which is better" of course we know what your going to say; But that does'nt mean a CTR is bad.

Are you guys who are saying tokicos-suck talking about the blues or the illumina's? cause if your talking about the blues.. then its not even a fair comparison..

also, the koni's might be better than AGX, but don't forget to factor in price. Koni's can be as much as 2x more than the agx. So even tho while koni's might be better than agx's, for the price, AGX might still be a great buy.

And another thing, if your just now going to get koni's and some GC's.. you might want to consider how far off that price is from a 900-1100 coilover system. Tein's and Zeal's are around that range..

Just something to think about.

KYB AGX $359.00
Tokico externally adjustable $419.00
Koni Sport $565.60 (Externally adjustable)

Sure Koni's are better, but are they $146.60 beter? (or $206.60 better than KYB?)

Or, for $90.60 less, you can get the "performance matched springs":
Tokico Illumina suspension kit $475.00 Lowers 1.25"

Has anyone tried these out?

(All prices quoted from Shox.com)

Tokico's will wear out in a year on anything other than stock springs, YES Konies they are worth the money, and they will save you money with the lifetime warranty.

Lifetime warranty applies only to manufacture defects. If you wear out the konis you'll be paying to have them re-valved. Not as easy as send in broken receive new for free.....

Ps: I'm well aware I bumped a 9 year old thread. This suspension question gets asked daily.

Koni FTW.
Have them in my rx7 track car and have handled 7 years if abuse. Hitting ripple strips, two wheel action from going off track and also the odd drift session.

I clean them after every meeting though and car is stored on axle stands so this would of help vs daily driving

what a coincidence...
what is the extend of the warranty/repairs with Koni? i have a sagging suspension corner with Koni "yellow" strut and in case the sagging is caused by the strut itself would like to know the details of the potential repair.

Go to a track on race day or show up to an autocross. See how many people are running Koni's compared to the other two you mentioned.

That should answer your question.

Tokico illumina's are grrrrreat! 5way adjustable, 3 years on a 2" drop still handles like a dream.. Don't know why so many people praise Koni. They're O.K....

Though Koni's were my first choice earlier, way back '04, I went with the KYB's since it was cheaper and it's what I can afford those times. Paired the KYB's with GC's 350F/250R, they performed very well when my hatch was still sporting a D15 sohc engine.

2 years later, I switched to Koni's right after swapping a B engine into the hatch. 450F/350R GC's this time. I loved the combo since so I bought two more sets, one for my crx and one for the other hatch. all of which are still with me till to date. I love 'em.
