Can I use my VAFC II to help me save fuel?
Not really...
Closed loop operation, youa re already tuned for decent mileage. open loop, you are on the gas hard anyway, so you aren't really going to be saving there.
Trying to lean it out to save gas is just goin got get you into detonation.

Running lean hurts your gas mileage just as much as running rich. The only time that running lean is beneficial to you is while at cruise or while decelerating.
The VAFC or any other piggyback doesn't allow you enough flexibility to do any real tuning like what you would need to tune drivability for better mileage.
You need a standalone ECU, like the AEM EMS, a wideband O2 sensor, and some dyno time.

But leaning doesn't necessarily mean better mileage.
A good intake, good exhaust, smooth driving, and a proper tune up with a good O2 sensor are your best bet.
Higher compression would help, but may be offset if you are then required to run premium gas.
