Default Iron Butt Association. who's down?

So, I'm sitting here in Alaska. Kodiak, Alaska to be exact. During my 8 or 9 hours of flying time (not including getting stuck in Anchorage for the night because of weather in Kodiak. We got within 500 feet with landing gear down, but we couldn't land.), I've managed to buy and read cover-to-cover every single motorcycle magazine I can find. That was kinda off-topic and useless but i felt like sharing.

Yesterday, I picked up the new Motorcyclist. In it is an article titled "Butt Burner". It's about a ride that Thad Wolf takes to join the Iron Butt Assosiation. (www.ironbutt.com). He does 3000 miles in three days! On the websites there are like 6 people who did 100k in a year, one of the 73 YEARS OLD!! Crazy.

To get your certificate you have to verify your route with gas-reciepts and maps and if reciepts arent available you have to have a witness of you being there (some nice soul who Iron Butt could call to verify you were there). It only costs around 40 bucks to get a bunch of stuff. Incorporate gas price and it adds up to an unforgettable weekend for not that much.

So whos in??? Im thinking a Saddle Sore 2000. 2000 miles in two days. Saturday and sunday. Could be anyone from the the DC/PA/MD/VA/WV area. I would definitely come home from school for a weekend to do this. Maybe late in august or later in september, early october (us college kids have to get settled during the beggining of september). I think it would be awesome to do this with a group of 5 or more. So whos got an Iron Butt??????

I know a guy who did the Iron Butt Rally. I can tell you that its no easy feat. Basically you need to modify your bike to carry more gas so you dont have to stop as often and you need to modify your gearing to have a large front and small rear for maximum fuel efficency. Its pretty serious. The guy I knew had such a large/small sprocket setup that he fried his clutch in traffic.

Oh and Im not down. I can do 500 in a weekend, no way Im doing 2000.

I did 500 miles in just over 6 hours on an RC51 and it about killed me.

After about 4.5 hours of straigh riding with fuel stops every 100 or so miles, I started loosing concentration. My mind wandered which resulted in some wandering on the highway. The wandering was bad enough for my two co-drivers, who followed in a car, to notice it.

If you're going to do a long distance run, keep hydrated. I had to refill my hydration pack every fuel stop - that's 2L every 100 miles averaging 75MPH+. I ate a banana or two with some salty potato chips at the fuel stops too. The water, salt, and potassium helps; especially when its hot out.

That said, I think I could do 1000 in a day on the YZF without issue as long as the bike was reliable.

if it's a somewhat windy road I prob could do it easier. highways just get SOOOO boring even with my ipod on. Ridden home to DE 3 times now which is also 3 times back to Blacksburg, VA. 400 miles each way. Never really a "fun" trip to do

yea it would definitely be a more-windy road than highways. prob a mix of both

You realize that averaging 50 mph a 2000 mile trip is 40 hours? If you take back roads and factor in stops there's no way you're doing it in 2 days.

This is the ride i've been planning for a little while, (this is a cut out section of Texas) Notice how it stays off the major highways and goes through more of the the smaller roads and towns. It's probably around 1000 miles round trip, I want to try and do it in probably november or december (still be like 65+ degrees in most parts of Texas during that time.) Perfect riding temps.

October 14-15th. How does that work for everyone? Should hit OPTIMAL riding season, it will be absolutely GORGEOUS outside. Should be late enough for people in college to get settled into the school year and be ready for a weekend away from the drunken blur how does that work for everyone?

I hail from the frederick area and frequent hagerstown all the time (gf lives there), where are you from excoupe?
