New to Hondas...questions regarding '96 Accord.
Hi all, I've been a Subaru driver for many years. I finally bought a '96 Accord EX Vtec SOHC with an auto tranny for a change, and well, I think I'm having a culture shock.
The first shocker with my Accord is the intial acceleration from a stand still. It seems like I have to push the rpms to about 3000 every gear, to get a brisk acceleration to about 45mph. After that it's fine, the 4th gear on the auto tranny would give me about 70mph doing a little less than 3000rpm.
Is that normal on Hondas? Because, I could achieve the same performance on my 1st gen Subaru Legacy auto. doing just 2200-2500 rpm.
The second question is about the auto tranny. I could barely feel the shift points on the Subaru Legacy's auto tranny. But on the Accord, I could difinitely feel the shift points on the tranny. It's not banging or grinding, but I could feel the shift points just like a manual tranny. Is that normal on the older Hondas?
The third question is about the tranny. What's up with that little transmission on the Accord with the 2.5 qt drain and fill capacity? On my Legacy, it's at least 3 times as big, and drain and fill is about 6 quarts with a separate differential using separate gear oil. Does that little Accord auto tranny even take abuse at all?
If you would answer some of my questions above and straighten me out, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
PS: The Accord has been tuned up, new plugs, wires, distributor cap, timing belt, oil and tranny fluid changed, EGR chamber and valve changed. It has about 82,000 miles on it and compression checked fine.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear in the post. But I just would like to confirm what I'm experiencing with my Accord is normal for Hondas or not, that's all.
Thanks for the reply anyways.

If it doesnt feel right... have it checked out. Accords are "luxury sedans" shouldnt be like riding in a hummer.
i have a 97 accord SE w/ 116k miles and the characteristics you describe is accurate to my accord's behavior. in order to merge on freeways i bring her up to 3k-3500 RPM. i can also feel every shift in the auto tranny. runs great. i dont think there's anything for you to worry about.
Thank you dukwei, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I guess the F22B1 loves to be revved

I used to have the same exact car, 5th. gen. EX w/auto.
Regarding brisk acceleration to 3k rpms, yes that sounds about right.
Regarding shift feel, my tranny had noticeable shifts as well. It ran great, no noises or anything, but it's certainly not as smooth as other auto trannys I've driven.
About the tranny fluid quantity, most honda trans. are in the 2-ish qt. area. I ran that transmission pretty aggresively for 140k miles and no issues.

dud in my opinion and i think a lot of others as well would agree with me that the 5th gen accords are probably the strongest accords made. they can take a beating and keep ticking. that tranny can handle more than you think so dont doubt your accord take of it and you'll be able to enjoy it for a long long time
Thanks folks, for the helpful replies. Now that I know it's normal for 5th gen. Accords, I feel much better about driving my Honda.
I'm sure I'll have more questions to ask later. This forum is one of the most knowledgeable and n00b friendly places on the internet.
Thanks again.
