Default trouble with removing axles on a 91 integra ls

im in the process of doing a b18a swap into a ef civic, im basically pulling the motor out of this 91 integra ls i have sitting in my house and using that to swap into the civic.

right now im on the axle removal step of the swap. ive got the car on jack stands, axle nuts have been removed on both sides, brake rotors and **** are out of the way. on the drivers side, where the damper thing is (has 2 arms going over the axle, which is holding the strut in place) there is 1 bolt on the top and 1 bolt on the bottom below the axle. I got the top bolt out, and the nut on the bottom bolt is off. the bolt itself turns but is not going anywhere. So i started beating the **** out ot the other side with a hammer, its moving but very slowly. i moved it in maybe an inch so far. I then went to try and turn the bolt with a rachet, and its just going back out the other side (ive turned it to the right and left, and its still wanting to just go out instead of in) so i really dont get it. this bolt is just pissing me off, what else can i do? ive got a breaker bar, impact, socket and wrench set if that helps.

now on the passenger side i managed to get that bolt out, and the damper fork is now off. i beat the **** out of the axle on the hub side, its moving along but not enough. do i just continue to beat it with a hammer till it goes out through the hub? Ive spent a couple days on just the suspension part of this and its just pissing me off more by the day because i keep running into more problems

This was kinda hard to understand, but is the problem that you can't get the bolt out? Or you can't get it back in? To get it out, I usually hammer a screwdriver through from the other side to push it out. To get it back in, I have to line it up by stepping on the wheel to push it down, then hammer it through and put the nut back on.

Or are you talking about removing the whole "damper thing" completely? Usually I grab both sides and twist it side to side and it comes off the shock.

well im trying to get the bolt out, which leads to being able to remove the whole damper fork, in which i can have more access to the axle.

whats wierd though is that even though im moving the bolt on the one side, the other side hasnt moved an inch....

haha yea i guess, the motor has 250k miles on it, yesterday i beat the axle into the hub pretty good, its about an inch inside the hub, but still has a waise to go before its out (just tried putting a screwdriver in there and beating it, wasnt really doing anything). um.... i can pop the axle out of hub without forcing the other end into the tranny right? or is that what the boots are for?

i just went out and tried prying the half shaft out of the tranny with a screwdriver, i undid some sort of rubber seal on it, and now theres black fluid coming out. i tried prying on the axle for prolly 20 minutes, no luck so far

i beat the hell out of the bolt holding the damper fork in on the drivers side, kinda rounding it off now (dont have a rubber hammer/mallet) i tried taking a screw driver or anything i could find to put on it and beat it with a hammer, its not moving anymore at all. so then i figured its punched all the way in, so i tried turning it on the other side, and what do ya know it decided to pop back out.

so ya im gonna take a break before i get pissed off enough to find something to cut the damper fork off and screw messing with the bolt anymore.

and btw, i have another set of axles that i bought off ebay a month or so ago, which was before i bought this integra, and after the motor is out, and everything i want out of it is out, the integra is going to the junkyard, so im not worried about breaking anything on it since im not going to use it.

about that cotter pin on the ball joint.... im guessing its not going to come out unless i have a needle nose? but i have the ball joint seperator for it if i ever get that far

I have a really small punch I use for the cotter pin..stick it in and hammer it through, then pull out with pliers.

that method worked, both cotter pins are out :D but now i dont know how to get the ball joints out. did some searching and your supposed to jack up the ball joint, stick a rachet somewhere and hammer it out? i just tried putting the ball joint seperator right underneath the boot, pried on it and nothing really happened.

still no luck on that god damn damper fork bolt or either of the axles

with the ball joint out you can swong the intire hub and upper arm out and take the axle out quite easily

did you take the shock and fork out as well?

for the ball joit they sell a fort at sears for removing them, the ball joint is the biggest bitch in the world, I use a large flathead screwdrives and hammer between the joint and the lower control arm and it should come out

the ball joints are funny, sometimes it will be easy, sometimes it will be hard and you beat on it for an hour and then it will just fall down

WD40 helps

the shock and fork are out on one side. the shock is just kind of hanging there by some lines that i havent figured out how to get off yet but not relaly worried about that right now.

yea ive sprayed the entire assembly down with wd40, but ive been told that stuff isnt good enough, so looks like im going to autozone or something tomoro.

damn though i didnt think removing axles would be this much fun..... something ive found out over time, taking **** out is easy, putting it back in is a whole new ball game. I've also never done any of this kind of stuff before, which is why its giving me so many headaches, ive basically just been taking **** apart that looks like its connected to the motor.

the shock is hanging from the brakelines, theyre should be 2 10mm bolts

the alxes are much easier to put in than to take them out, ive done it more than a few times

You stick it between the bottom of the ball joint and the piece it sits in that's part of the wheel assembly, then hammer it in until it separates. I also use it to pry axles from the tranny.

get a ball joint seperator, or a pitman arm puller. if ur working on the floor its gonna be harder.
