Sorry if this sounds dumb, I just want to be safe.

I have a '91 Honda Accord EX, 254,000 miles. I bought the car with 207,336 miles on the odometer. I've been using regular petroleum based oils since I bought it. I have no clue what the old owners used in it. I could probably find out if needed. I was wondering though if it was safe to switch over to synthetic, and maybe help entend the already long life of the car even further, or is there a great risk of problems doing this?

 

You will get opinions from both sides on this one. It is not a dumb question. Synthetic motor oil is slipperier than regular oil. It is a fact that synthetic oil is not to be used to break in a new engine. It is reported that the synthetic oil molecules are smaller than regular oil. In your situation, with so many miles, your engine is well-broken-in. Perhaps it is best to continue with regular motor oil.

Unforunately I have decided today that when my new Mustang arrives I'll be trading in my Honda. So I guess it kinda doesn't matter now. The transmission was really acting up bad today (has been giving me a little bit of delay going into gear, and it got bad and literally "clunked" today) and so after 254,000, I gotta say bye-bye to my car.
