Default I'm gonna shoot myself in the face......

so, after 7 months of gathering parts, waiting on the block, and fabrication and installation......i finally get the chance to get to take the car to houston to get it tuned. and the results..........

My sh*t is f**ked up!!

i took it to Jason in houston (st00pid) again- by the way, i HIGHLY recommend him as a tuner, he's a great guy, and an even better tuner ), and we get it on the dyno. the engine has had some problems cranking up now and again, but i just figured that it had something to do with the previous tune and the new setup. i figured he'd tune out and it would start right up.........WRONG. the problem was that the Action clutch-- (let me type it in bold so you know who i'm talking about ACTION CLUTCHES-- heavy duty pressure plate was a bit too heavy duty for the block to handle. it was pushing such an excessive force on the crank that it would cause the crank to push up against the thrust washer so hard that it would squeeze any oil between the two out, causing extreme friction upon startup, and even once it was running until oil pressure built up really good. over the course of about 250 miles on this BRAND NEW engine, the crank has managed to destroy about 2/3 of one of the thrust washers, while the other had so much slack that it just fell into the oil pan, being slung around like a pin ball on the way down apparently. the crank then had the freedom to walk back and forth about 1/4", destroying all of my bearings, and scarring up my crank enough to render it useless. one of the main caps is done as well.

this sucks really bad, and i'm going to attempt to rebuild if somehow i can find the way to get enough money to do so. as far as i can see, the block, pistons, rods, and head are still in good shape. i'm going to further tear them down and inspect them to see what's up, but either way, this SUCKS.

so, if you have an h22 crank, main caps, girdle, or even block and you're looking to get rid of it pretty cheap, im me and i'll take a look at what you've got.

now if you'll excuse me, i think i'm about to go throw up.

OMG What was this pressure plate designed for? 500hp or something?...

Man sorry to hear that. I don't think many of us would ever concieve the possibility of that ever occurring. Knowledge of this will make the rest of us do a little more investigation before buying a new clutch.

wow, that is crazy, but im sure there are other people running super heavy duty clutches, like oaks and pretty much anyone over 500+ whp? I guess you could fix it by bypassing the clutch switch and start it in neutral

yeah thats something to think about. i guess anytime you got the clutch pushed in you are shoving the realease bearing into the pressure plate in to the thrust washer.

Wow, I would've never imagined something like this to happen. Sorry to hear it happened to you, I guess we all live and learn. If I were in your situation, I think a call to Action Clutches would be in order. Eitherway, goodluck with everything and keep us updated.

i plan on calling Action as soon as i get the chance......maybe tomorrow. but jason told me that he's talked to ACT before about this issue, and they pretty much deny any liability and blame it on something else. i took the tranny off today and found nothing fishy going on, and everything was installed properly. to me it seems a little strange that i was using this exact clutch and pressure plate on the previous motor and it seemed to work just fine. after tearing down that motor the thrust washers looked fine, but these thrust washers were destroyed. oil pressure was fine in this engine, so oil had to be getting to these washers, except that the crank was jamming up against this one so hard that the oil couldn't even get in. i may not have had this problem had i just bypassed the clutch in the first place, allowing oil to adequately seep in between the crank and washers.

jason brought this up to me, and it's a good idea. i will do this in the future, and encourage anyone else to do so as well. that way i could crank the car without pushing in the clutch.

sorry to hear about your misfurtune. i have seen this happen a few times as well. it would be best to start w/ another block w/ all the original matching caps. i would NOT recommend swaping maincaps from another block. goodluck

i've found that the block is going to be ok. the crank did scar it a bit where the thrust washer sits on the clutch side, but i'm going to dress it up a bit and probably tac weld the new washer in so that it doesn't want to move and smooth down the welds.......i'm still looking into that. also the oil pump gears are pretty scarred. the pump is brand new, but i guess all that metal had plenty of time to tear it up. i think i'm really lucky that it wasn't worse than this.

i'm also going to continue to use the main caps that i have already. the crank has scarred them as well, but they are still functional. if i did buy new caps i'd just do a line bore so all the clearances would be good.

so i just need a crank and new bearings (rod & main) and a new oil pump and a "not so heavy duty" pressure plate.

Sorry to hear this. Is it possible the thrust bearing was installed backwards? Good luck on the repairs.

Who assembled the motor?

the thrust bearing was installed properly, and i'm confident that the motor was built perfectly. it was built by one of my good friends buck lemoine in Utah, and all clearances were double checked by two sets of experienced eyes.

the build was not the problem, the pressure plate was the problem.

The only reason I question the assembly is because the only variable here is the motor build. What was the break in procedures? What oil did you use upon start up?

If you're confident it was the pressure plate that exerted extreme force on the crank, then by all means try to settle it with Action and hopefully get it sorted out. Good luck.

why would a company make a clutch that would damage the engine?
