The Special Edition is usually below the EX (between the LX and EX).
It's usually an LX with some EX features like sunroof and rear discs or something.

I think that in the 6th gen (98-02), the only differences are some options like tractions control, 1CD vs. 6CD changer, passenger side power seats, extra airbags, etc. I'm not sure of the engine. Its obviously some variation of the F23.

Which gen are you talking about Dave? If your talking about 4th, then the SE had every EX option plus different wheels, passenger airbags, power seats and CD player.

for 5th gens the Special Edition was b/w the LX and EX. The s/e is basically a LX with sunroof, cd player and rear disk brakes , oh yeah power seats. the s/e also had teh 130 hp lx motor. oh yeah alloys
for 6th gens, they s/e has the same motor as the lx and ex(they're all f23a with vtec), has rear disk brakes, alloy wheels, ummm, sunroof, power seats, cd player/tape player and i think you can only get it in auto, im not sure about the 5th gen.
the only thing that u cannot get on a s/e and get on an EX are the leather seats.

oooom.. i thought SE=Special Edition?
SE was the top trim level for the 4th gen (and I think the 3rd gen had an SE-i).
The Special Edition equivalent of the 4th generation was the Aniversary Edition, and just like the 5th and 6th gen Special Editions, was between the LX and EX.
He did not ask about the SE. He asked about the Special Edition. When they did exist, the SE was above the EX. The Special Eds have always been between the LX and EX.
4 cyl 6th gens dont have traction control. Its only the V6.
The special editions always feature different paint colors correct?

5th gen special eds have no rear disk brakes, no power seats either. They came in 3 colors, one of which(black currant pearl) can only be had in that trim. In dash cd changer, power windows, locks, mirror, moon roof, F22b. 6th gens I have no idea...oh yes nice pretty alloys on the 5th gen too
