Type R in Traffic
Whats up Everyone,
I have a 1998 CW and was wondering if its normal for the Type R to jerk hard while in first or second gear. I experience it in traffic alot. When I say jerk, I mean during cruising and not when engaging in those gears.
For example, your driving in 1st or 2nd and let go of the gas to cruise alittle bit. When stepping on the gas again it jerks really hard forward.
Another situation is when letting go of the gas pedal it pulls back really hard.
Is this normal? I was wondering because I was driving a friend's GSR and her's seem really smooth even though her car is a 95 with more miles. Thanks again for the help!

Yes, it's probably normal. You will learn to adjust your driving technique.
If you're in the lower gears, you need to be very careful with the throttle, and use the clutch if you want everything to go really smoothly.

if its doing this when on and off the gas, but barely/lightly touching the gas, it can be a tuning issue, or possibly a problem with the TPS. does the car have a stock ECU?
also, could be a sign of your motor mounts taking a ****. grab the valve cover and see if you can shake the motor by hand.
lastly, maybe be a tranny issue, aka driveline slack?

Thanks for the reply ... I feel like I am having trouble with my tranny ... I've posted this question before and people said it may be a mainshaft issue. Will that cause this jerking? Also, it does happen when I barely/lightly touch the gas or let go.

To answer the rest of the thread, the car is completely stock. Also is what is TPS and I'll check the motor mount today. Thannks again for the help!

you guys mentioned it might be the engine mount .. I tried to grab the valve cover and move it .. but it seems find ... is there another way to check if I need to replace the mounts?
I tried searching through the archives, people just said they were able to move the engine, but at that point the mount is pretty bad. Thanks

im thinking its the tranny, i remember this happening to me in my VW GTI though, the exact same thing...also in my fathers Ford F-250 (i know both examples are totally diff cars), i would get someone to check the transmission out or you can if you know what to look for
I just replaced the rear mount on my '97 and it solved that problem. The bottom two fronts were torn too.
What happens is that the rubber in the mount cracks and the whole motor and tranny lurch with the slightest bit of gas in 1st, 2nd & 3rd.
Just email Len and see what he can get you a rear mount for and swap it out. Just be really patient when you do it and make sure you take out your intake.
Several long extentions will be a must.

I really dont think its anything out of the ordinary. What rpm is this occuring at?
The clutch and flywheel are more high performance then other cars. SO its easier to be jerky with the R.
Try being a little more smooth with your inputs and keep the car above 2-2500 rpm in first or any other gear.

had the same symptoms in my gsr.... upon visual inspection of the mounts i found that 3 of them were torn and in need of replacement. threw some new OEM ones in and no more jerking in 1-2-3 gears

Sounds like shock loads going through your drive line. If you just drop the clutch in first and second it'll do that. Ever see the cab of a 18 wheeler twist when he's stuck in traffic thats the same thing. You get the engine and trans at a point where its inbetween a accel state and a decel state. If you really do suspect a mount pull the hand brake (hard so so dont run over your friend) and put it in first. Then put a load on the engine, as if your pulling out from a stop. Have someone watch your mounts as you do this.
The car has is very sensitive to inital throttle inputs. You can especially feel it in lower gears. The simple answer is like that old joke:
Patient : "Doctor! Doctor! It hurts when I bend my arm like this"
Doctor" "Don't bend your arm like that"
